8/2/10

Savannah 2, Augusta 1

from press release:

Nick Santomauro doubled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and preserved the win with his glove in the Savannah Sand Gnats’ 2-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at Historic Grayson Stadium on Sunday night. The Gnats (15-21/57-49) earned a split of their four-game series with the GreenJackets (18-17/59-46) before departing on a nine-game roadtrip to Rome and Charleston which begins Monday night.

In a 1-1 game in the seventh inning, RF Cesar Puello led off with a beautiful bunt base hit along the third base line. It was the third hit of the night for Puello, who finished 3-4 and has now hit safely in 11 straight games and 19 of his last 20 contests. In his last 11 games, Puello is hitting .465 (20-for-43). Puello advanced to second on a groundout and then stole third. He was still at third with two outs when Santomauro sliced a double just inside the left field line to bring home Puello with the go-ahead run and a 2-1 Savannah lead.

With the Gnats up 2-1 in the top of the eighth inning, reliever Brandon Sage faced GreenJackets’ RF Daniel Cook with runners at first and second and one out. Cook lined a shot to left, but Santomauro, on the dead run, reached up and made the catch. He then wheeled and fired to second to double off the runner and preserve Savannah’s 2-1 advantage.

Michael Powers worked around a pair of runners in the ninth for his 14th save. Guillaume Leduc held the GreenJackets scoreless over 2.1 innings in relief of starter Jimmy Fuller to earn his first Savannah win. Gnats pitchers did not record a 1-2-3 inning, but kept the GreenJackets to one run.
