The Backman Teufel Overdrive… takin’ care of business

Mack Ade
It’s becoming quite obvious that Sandy Alderman…err.. Alderschmidt… cough… Alderson (private joke with Rubin) will balance off his Marine approach to the GM job with a B personality manager.

Makes sense, front office wise, but does it bench wise?

Sources of mine in the Yankees organization always told me that the only kind of manager that can survive in New York City is a B-personality. Call it a combo of wacko ownership, A-personality GM, Gestapo press, and fans that would make a French protest proud.

But, didn’t all these B personality guys have a Don Zimmer in the dugout?

I never met Wally Backman, but I don’t have to in order to figure out what kind of personality he has. No disrespect, but YouTube and police sites have supplied that info.

Regarding “Tuff”, I can speak first hand on. This is one tough son or a bitch that runs a tight ship and, it really doesn’t matter whether you like this guy or not… you always walk away respecting him.

Tim was tough to work with as a beat reporter, but I was kind of a wacko guy that hung out in the locker room once too often. He kept his distance during the season, but was always on time for a scheduled meeting. Mrs .Mack even baked him his favorite cookies (oatmeal raisin), which got a nod and a thanks… but, on the last day of the season, he called me in his office and we shot the shit for well over an hour.

A nice man with a tough approach to a miserable job. Hitting fungos in 2006 to a bunch of kids that had the worst W-L record in minor league baseball.

These are the kind of guys I want in the Mets dugout. Ex-Mets. Ex-winners. Team guys (not like Gary Carter or Nails).

Do they get along? I have no idea, but that never stopped either one of them.
