He is about to become the first catcher in baseball history to appear in the Fall Classic against a team he played for earlier in the season.



Molina is the Rangers’ catcher, a savvy veteran whose three-run home run in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series was critical to knocking off the Yankees.



Molina also was the Giants’ catcher from 2007 until July 1 of this year, when he was traded to Texas for reliever Chris Ray and minor leaguer Michael Main

Alderson and Steroids:



Anyhow, back to (Dan) Rather's piece, which picks up the current-day Dominican story -- a lot like the old one, with a system rife with corruption and exploitation. The difference now, as Rather tells it, is that Seattle native Sandy Alderson, a former Oakland A's general manager, MLB vice president and San Diego Padres CEO, has been dispatched by MLB to the DR as a consultant to "clean things up.''


For years, MLB has resisted implementing drug testing of Dominican teens before they sign contracts with big-league clubs. Five years ago, when I worked on the story, the MLB official line was that Dominican law made it tough for baseball officials from here to carry out tests in what is, in fact, a foreign country. But MLB critics for years have suggested that money was the real reason for the reluctance, given the expense involved in testing so many kids, the majority of which had little chance of ever making it to the majors.


Well, that's now changing.


In Rather's piece, we learn that Alderson recently implemented a pilot project in which 40 young Dominican players were drug tested in advance of signing contracts. A third of them failed.

Orlando Hudson:



The O-dawg has openly expressed his interest in wanting to play for the Mets (that can’t exactly be said for many players). I have touched on this possible signing in the past. He may be a good option on a one-year deal, but with Tejada on the verge of becoming an everyday player (hopefully), I’m not sure if the Mets will pull the trigger on Hudson.



So there you have it, some free agents who are available this winter that will garner much attention from many teams. But the Mets might be better off sitting tight, maybe making a trade or two to improve and hope that they can field a competitive team.

The 2010 Mets lost 26 games by one run this season. In those 26 losses the Mets gave up an average of 4.5 runs per game and scored 3.69 runs in that span. Of the 26 games, 18 were started by someone other than Santana or Pelfrey.


Now, would the Mets have had a better chance of winning any of those 18 games if they had a front line arm at their disposal, more so than another bat? If they won 12 of those 18 games, the Mets would have won 91 games – the same total as the National League Wild Card Braves
