BP - One, Jenrry Mejia - Analysis: Mejia's heater did earn him a big-league job, but to what end? The soon-to-be 21-year-old Dominican needed innings and repetition more than getting his feet wet in the big leagues. He's back to starting, but 2010 was not a favor to him development-wise.Two Through Eleven: Outfielder Fernando Martinez (second) played well when healthy, but that's been the story for five years now, and it's starting to wear thin. Infielder Wilmer Flores (third) reached High-A (and played well there) as a 19-year-old, but he's not a shortstop, and he's yet to show much in the way of secondary skills. Ike Davis (fourth) became a fan favorite in New York, but he wasn't nearly as good as his hype, as a 791 OPS for a first baseman isn't all that good. Left-hander Jon Niese (fifth) matured into a dependable mid-to-back rotation starter in the big leagues, while righty Brad Holt absolutely collapsed by walking 79 in 95 minor league innings. Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (seventh) proved that last year's offensive breakout was real, but questions about his ability to play up the middle remain. Josh Thole (eighth) made his case to be the everyday catcher in 2011, where at least he'll provide some on-base skills. Shortstop Ruben Tejada (10th) still looks like a nice utility player down the road, while fellow infielder Reese Havens (11th) looked like much more than that before the injury bug struck again. Sleeper: Left-hander Robert Carson didn't take the expected step forward, and was exposed at Double-A with an 8.32 ERA in 10 starts.

NYDN - Selig has given the Mets the OK to talk to Alderson, who now oversees Major League Baseball's efforts to improve operations in the Dominican Republic. In turn, the Mets also are interested in talking to Alderson, according to the sources. It is not yet known if Alderson wants the job. Credited with building the A's teams that reached the World Series from 1988-1990, winning in 1989, Alderson worked more recently as the CEO of the San Diego Padres. Although the Mets are also considering younger assistant GMs, like Hahn, Byrnes and Logan White of the Dodgers, an older candidate like Alderson would allow the team to groom John Ricco as the team's eventual GM. Ricco was passed over when the Mets cut ties with Minaya, because ownership wanted a fresh voice from outside the organization.

NYP - Gerry Hunsicker is flattered to be mentioned as one of the candidates in the Mets' front office search, but he said yesterday he prefers to stay with the Rays as senior VP of baseball operations. "This is where I want to be at this point in my life," Hunsicker told The Post. He said he has a lot of respect for Mets owner Fred Wilpon from their time together when Hunsicker was farm director of the club, but this is more about the commitment that such a job would entail, especially in New York, where there are many more demands that take up time and energy.
rapidcityjournal. - A man facing allegations that he collected close to $30,000 for a baseball clinic and youth traveling team that never materialized was arrested in Tennessee for driving with a suspended license. Jason A. Anderson, 35, wanted in Pennington County for grand theft by deception, was arrested Thursday by Tipton County sheriff's deputies in Brighton, Tenn., who had approached Anderson's vehicle at about 12:10 a.m. for suspicious activity around his parked vehicle in the roadway, county public information officer Donna Turner said by phone Thursday. Brighton is about 30 miles northeast of Memphis, Tenn.

bleacherreport. - Grade: B - Stats: (15-9, 1 SV, 3.66, 1.38) - Pelfrey was dominant the first half of the season. He looked as if he was deserving of an All-Star Game invitation. People even began to question if he was the true ace of the staff this year. Everyone wondered if Pelfrey was finally going to reach his potential. Pelfrey began to struggle in the second half and all of the positive vibes surrounding him disappeared. However, Pelfrey did have a career best 3.66 ERA this season.
