The Mack Draft Report – 10-28-10:
BA singled out RHP Dylan Dickens in the recent WWBA games. Dickens, who comes out of Person High School, in Roxboro, North Carolina, pitched a complete game shutout for his Cardinals Scout team. According to BA, his fastball was sitting only in the mid-70s (???) but the submarine pitcher had sick movement all over it. He added in a low-60’s curveball and the fans were waiting for the knuckler that never came.

I update the mock drafts around the 15th of the month and I’ve already got six new ones to figure in. A sneek peak look at the shortstop rankings which have changed drastically since the mock draft process began.
Early on, B.A. Vollmouth was the odds on favorite but he has now dropped to 5th overall, behind Jason Esposito (also a third baseman), Francisco Lindar, Christian Lopes, and Phillip Evans. The two largest gains in ranking this past month go to Brad Miller, who went from 10th to 6th and Javier Baez, who has climbed from 11th tp 8th.
Tyler Greene continues to drop (7th) and has now not been named in the last six drafts, and Dione Williams, who is basically off the board.

Junior shortstop Joe Panik was named the 81st top college baseball player by CBB . I currently have Panik as the 13th top shortstop, according to the mock draft experts I keep track of. He had a wonde ful season in August in the Cape Cod League and was named the Coca-Cola Player of the Week during that tournament. He’s coming off a sophomore season for St. John’s in which he hit .374/.477/.621.

Diamond Scapes came out with their notes on the first day of the WWBA. Featured were RHP Jose Fernandez (without question, 6-foot-5, 235-pound righthander Jose Fernandez, Alonso HS, Tampa, Fla., stood above all others on Day One of Perfect Game’s World Wood Bat Association Championships), RHP Dylan Davis (His fastball ranged from 92-93 mph and peaked at 94 with exceptional sinking life in the first inning before settling in at 90-92), Dwight Smith (one of the top outfielders in this year’s prep class, showed excellent bat speed in his powerful lefthanded stroke), John Magliozzi (listed at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, sat 90-92 mph and touched 93 with a handle for three secondary pitches), and Tyler Pike (His handedness and feel for pitching make him a moderate-to-high follow for the 2012 draft).
I only had Fernandez as the 42nd top right-hander going into this tournament and I wouldn’t be surprised to see his name higher up on the next set of mock drafts that come in. Sully did have him 25th overall, Hickey placed him 47th and Frankie Piliere/Fanhouse said “big, physically mature frame. Jumping fastball at 91-94 mph, touches 95 consistently. Also shows big raw power at the plate but will pitch long term.”
Davis has beena consistent pick in the early-on mocks, ranking right now as the 16th top RHP. Everybody has his fastball peaking at 94, but the general knock on him is that it has very little to no movement.
Smith has fell a little in the composite mock draft, but he still comes in as the 6th overall outfielder, which should guarantee him at least a 1st supplement round pick. Son of ex-major leaguer Dwight Smith Jr., he looks to have the same powerful swing as his father. Only 5-11.
