4-7-10 from: http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2253 - 3B Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt): Esposito, an unsigned seventh-round pick in 2008, is too good an athlete and too good a hitter to expect him to be anything but a first-round pick in 2011. He’s hitting .363-7-38 with 14 steals this spring, and is a standout defensively at third base

6-12-10 from: - http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/wait-til-next-year-2011-draft-preview - The most well-rounded player up the middle is Jason Esposito (.359/.453/.582), who really came into his own in year two under Tim Corbin at Vanderbilt. He’s now patient, with developing gap power and a threat on the bases (career 50-for-59). Maybe a third baseman in the end, but a five-tool one …

5-18-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/05/18/tcbb-players-of-the-week-may-18th - The College Baseball Blog continues our tradition of naming National Player and Pitcher of the Week. This week we honor Jason Esposito of Vanderbilt as our Player of the Week. Even though Jason Esposito lost out on SEC Player of the Week Honors, he gets our National Player of the Week. Esposito started off the week with a Walk-Off Homerun against Louisville in the Bottom of the 17th inning that by our estimations still has yet to land. Over the weekend, Esposito went 10 for 19, with 9 runs scored, 2 RBI, and drew a total of 7 walks. On Sunday, he drew 5 walks while going 1-1 with a double to extend his on base streak to 15 straight at bats. Esposito’s clutch efforts in helping Vanderbilt go 4-0 on the week helped Vanderbilt clinch their spot in the SEC Tournament.

Throwing arm is solid and has the offensive potential to hit 20-25 HR drive in 80 plus runs and hit close to 300 with good eye hand coordination and pitch discipline, will be over aggressive at times, but that is natural for most hitters. Will be in the bigs quicker than Tony Graffanino was years back.
10-7: - http://www.draftsite.com/article/2011-MLB-Draft-Preview-College-Hitters/43 - If ever there was a player in this class that just looked like a natural baseball player, it is Jason Esposito. At 6’1" and 198 lbs, he has an extremely athletic build to compliment his exceptionally fluid actions. At the plate Esposito’s swing is incredibly smooth, balanced and athletic. The lack of wasted movement and bat speed allow him to make consistent contact and produce very good power. In the field he is very quick and agile, with soft hands and more than enough arm strength. Esposito has everything he needs to move up draft boards, and with another productive season, he should hear his name early.

Vanderbilt (Jr.) - Esposito was a late addition, coming aboard after Rendon was lost for the season. The Vandy third baseman is a rare fringe-5-tool talent at the hot corner, showing potential across the board. He is a force with metal, though his ability to square with wood is hindered some by his current swing, which can get a little hitchy and holey. Esposito could profile at any number of positions as a pro, and it would not be a surprise to see him settle into the outfield -- particularly if there are any questions about his bat translating. He will be on of many 'Dores followed closely this upcoming spring and with a strong showing could force his way into the first round -- no small accomplishment given the depth of the draft class on the whole.

Phil Evans, SS, LaCosta Canyon HS (Calif.) 7-25 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/7/24/1585669/all-questions-answered#comments - I like Evans more than I do Cron, and I think he has a legitimate shot to stick at shortstop in the long run, though he’s a fringe-average runner, if not below-average. He has great footwork and an above-average arm, and his bat is definitely first round caliber. Solid-average power potential and a good swing for average, too. Very good player for his age, though there’s the concern that his lack of speed will hamper his range in the long run.
8-13-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=122 - There were four hits for the Brewers and two by middle infielder Phillip Evans (5'10" 180, R/R) from La Costa Canyon HS-Carlsbad (CA). Evans plays with some flash that I don't care for but underneath is all he is a really solid and talented baseball player, with good skill, ability, and feel for the game. He hits to all fields, hits all pitches, and is a good baserunner. In the infield you will not find too many fielders with softer hands than he has. I can see him being a favorite of the scouts come draft day for his potential as an offensive second baseman, maybe along the lines of a Placido Polanco type.
8-17-10 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/17/which-2011-mlb-draft-prospects-impressed-as-aflac-all-americans - Phil Evans, SS: Evans is a complete baseball player with instincts beyond his years, and it would be easy to paint him just with that brush. However, his raw tools shouldn't be discounted. The right-handed hitting shortstop continues to be one of my favorite players in the class because he hits with authority in game action against elite pitching. He also showed off plus raw power in batting practice and one of the most consistent line-drive swings at the event. At shortstop, he flashed his quick release and good first step. The profile here is very well-rounded, and Evans plays more like an advanced college middle infielder than a prep player.
8-31-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=142 - Phillip Evans - MIF, 5'9" 181, R/R, La Costa Canyon HS (CA) - Evans is a classic "ballplayer" but he also has tools. Some will scoff at his size but he plays much bigger than he is. Evans honestly can do it all on the field and he does it with flair, which generally keeps your eyes on him. He is an all-field spray/contact hitter with gap power. Defensively he has a plus arm and exceptionally soft hands, to go with good instincts. He does occasionally come up too early on ground balls and there are times his flashy style can get the best of him.
10-27-10 from: - http://www.tossitaround.com/baseball-news/prospect-news/8229-top-70-prospects-for-the-2011-draft-11.html - Phil Evans is a talented middle infielder for LaCosta Canyon High School in California. He is one of the better defenders in the nation and shows very good range. Many people project that he will become a 2nd baseman at the next level as he has very soft hands and can make difficult plays look easy. He is not a very big kid as he is listed at 5’10 180 but he has deceptive power and can hit the ball to all parts of the field. Evans had a very good junior season at the plate as he hit for a .489 average with 5 homeruns and 22 RBI. He has decent speed but will not be a big base stealing threat at the next level. He is a gamer that lives to play ball. Teams are always looking for someone like him to help form a team because of his leadership capabilities. Phil Evans has made a verbal commitment to play for San Diego State University following his senior season in 2011. All signs point to him heading to college and not the professional level but a team will still take a chance in drafting him because of his talent level. While in college he will really benefit from the coaching of Tony Gwynn. Gwynn will look to polish Evans skills and make him into a marquee player that will be ready to make a difference at the professional level.

8-19-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=4935 - Lindor looks as though he was born to play the sport, bringing grace, ease and enthusiasm to the game that makes him a pleasure to watch. He has a lean, smaller frame, but there is room to add some strength and more power to his swing. And while he did win the home run derby, I’m sure he would be the first to admit that he’s not a power hitter. He is a switch hitter though, and is short to the ball with gap-to-gap power. He drove a high fastball the opposite way to deep left field for a triple off of Ricky Jacquez in the fourth inning. He’s sound defensively and made a very good play in the first inning, ranging quickly to his right before throwing a strike to first base to throw out Travis Harrison.
8-17-10 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/17/which-2011-mlb-draft-prospects-impressed-as-aflac-all-americans - Francisco Lindor, SS: The switch hitting Lindor is a very different player from each side of the plate. As a lefty, he has a more slashing line-drive swing. From the right side, he has much more lift and raw power. He doesn't look the part given his small frame but Lindor has legitimate average to slightly above-average power from the right side. He also continues to show off outstanding tools at shortstop, and is a very exuberant presence on the field.
8-27 from: - http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com - SS-2B Francisco Lindor Monteverde HS, Clermont FL 5'10 170 S/R - quickness afoot and with his bat, puts the bat on the ball, occ lift with foul line power to hit 8-10 type HR in in ML, solid ML arm with carry and quick release ala Ozzie Smith, runs 4.2 from left but better between the bases to steal 20-30 plus bases in ML. Don't let him get away if you need defensive with offensive potential to shine!!
9-17-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2010/2610683.html - Joe LeCates (Easton, MD): What type of future power grade would you put on Francisco Lindor? The ball certainly jumps off his bat, and he won the AFLAC HR Derby, but is essentially more of a gap guy given his stature? Conor Glassey: Aflac HR Derby aside, I don't think Lindor profiles as a big power guy. He's just not that big and doesn't have that kind of swing. He does have bat speed and can certainly put a charge into the ball, but I'd guess he'd be more in the 8-12 HR range as a pro. 9-17-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2010/2610683.html
10-7-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=153 - In this year’s class, #1 Francisco Lindor (Montverde HS, FL) stands out as having the smoothest defensive actions in recent memory. Though his 60 yard-dash times have hovered around average, Lindor has very quick feet and excellent balance as a shortstop. The 6’3”, 173 lb Gabriel Rosa (International Baseball Academy, PR) has a plus arm and very good actions, earning the #3 ranking. Even after he fills out and gains bulk, I believe Rosa still has a chance to play a big league-caliber shortstop.
10-21-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=168 - Francisco Lindor (Montverde Academy, FL) was never a stranger to scouts in Florida, but after beginning the summer as a slick-fielding slap hitter, Linder ended it as a multi-dimensional threat. He headlines the Prospect Wire Top-100 High School prospect list (seniors only). Even veteran scouts are hard-pressed to recall a smoother and more athletic high school shortstop. Lindor glides to the ball, has a plus-plus arm, and exceptionally quick hands. When the 5’11”, 170 lb switch-hitter won the AFLAC Home Run Derby, nobody in Florida could believe it until he came back east and the local scouts could see it for themselves. History has been kinder to the first-drafted high school shortstop than it has to the prep pitcher. Underlying the success rate is the fact that they’re the best athletes who can move to other positions and the ones who go early have good bats, too. Lindor certainly fits the mold completely.
10-31-10 from: - http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/2010.10.01_arch.html - Shortstop Francisco Lindor (Montverde Academy, Montverde, Fla.) solidified his place as one of the top position players in this year’s prep class. It’s rare to find a high school shortstop who projects to stay at his position, but Lindor certainly does thanks to soft hands, a solid-average throwing arm and tremendous instincts. And for a smaller player, the switch-hitter has unsuspecting power in his level-planed swing.
10-29-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5086 - SS Francisco Lindor (FTB Mizuno): Lindor solidified his position as the best position prospect in the 2011 class with an 8-for-19 performance that included three doubles and two home runs, despite almost missing the first few games due to illness. The level of shortstop play at the event was noteworthy and Lindor stands clearly above even that talented group.
http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/blog.html - Day Four – WWBA - Shortstop Francisco Lindor (Montverde HS, Montverde, Fla.) continued to dazzle both defensively and offensively. In the field, he displayed smooth actions and creativity to go with good arm strength and accuracy from multiple angles. At the dish, the Florida State commit launched his first home run of the event. Lindor, a switch-hitter, is among the most complete high school players in the draft, with an up-the-middle defensive profile and a quality bat from both sides of the plate (more power coming from the right).

Clemson Univ. - Trials Notes: Miller has a long frame with a lean build and thin hips. His physical projection is up for debate, but he'll certainly need to add a little strength to thrive at the next level. He can play across the infield right now, but his hands and range project best to the hot corner, with a chance to stick at second with a little better footwork and reps at the position. He's also athletic enough to shift to an outfield corner, if needed, but shows enough aptitude in the infield that it should not be required any time soon. At the plate, Miller gets good leverage in his swing, loading high with his hands and producing some backspin and carry when he gets hard contact. His power is to the gaps right now, but with a little more strength he could see some homerun pop with wood as he improves his bat speed (which is light right now against good velocity). The Clemson shortstop is one of three player returning from last year's USA CNT and will be draft eligible in 2011.

Clemson (Jr.) - Miller made nice strides this spring, hitting for average and some power while showing a keen understanding of the strikezone (walking in just under 17% of his plate appearances while striking out in just 14% of the same). While his power began to develop with metal during the spring season, his strength and bat speed are still lacking with wood. His swing is solid, showing lift and carry when he centers the ball, and the chance for average power as he continues to physically mature. Defensively, Miller is capable of holding down all four infield positions at the college level but probably profiles best to second base as a pro, provided his footwork continues to improve. He could profile as an offensive-minded second baseman with average pop and and an average to tick above-average glove. If by chance he cannot hold down second, he also has the athleticism to shift to the outfield if needed.

8-17-10 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/17/which-2011-mlb-draft-prospects-impressed-as-aflac-all-americans - Javier Baez, SS: Baez continues to be one of the best all-around prep position players in the country. As he proved at the PG National, he can hit good pitching with authority and has legitimate opposite-field thump. Baez showed off some big raw power in batting practice, and his compact swing carries over well in the games.
10-12-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=157 - Javier Baez (Arlington Country Day, FL) stands 5’10”, 170 lbs and doesn’t look much like Scott Rolen or Evan Longoria. Exceedingly smooth and athletic, Baez has already been ranked #2 among the nation’s best middle infielders and #3 among catchers. Nevertheless, the hot corner may be his most natural position. Baez projects as a high-average hitter more than a slugger, but could certainly develop power down the road. It’s his defensive prowess and athleticism that stands out above power, Baez has gold glove potential at the hot corner with his very quick hands and plus range.
10-31-10 from: - http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/2010.10.01_arch.html - Even on an FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team that was loaded with pro prospects, Javier Baez (Arlington Country Day HS, Jacksonville, Fla.) managed to stand out. Baez, a fast-twitch athlete who is capable of fielding a variety of positions, made a couple of sparking plays at third base behind Owens. He also showed excellent bat speed and above-average power potential, although his plate approach is raw at this stage.
10-27-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=3012 - FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team third baseman Javier Baez from Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville has a lot of tools. HS Greene is one of the top all-around shortstops in this year's class. He has a major league body and runs a sub-6.5-second 60-yard dash, has a strong arm and shows above-average raw power. He has soft, sure hands in the field with good instincts. He is committed to Georgia.

He is an above-average runner with a quick bat and natural power from right-center field over. McFarland is a versatile defender who can play the infield and outfield and will be coming to the Under Armour game fresh off his stint with the USA 18U national team.
8-16-10 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/8/16/1625615/2010-under-armour-all-american#storyjump - Chris McFarland, IF/OF, Lufkin HS (Tex.) - Committed to Rice, McFarland has some of the quickest hands in the high school ranks, and they stood out immediately during batting practice. The right-hander showed surprising pop to all fields for his frame, staying inside the ball well and using plus bat speed to project for above-average power potential. An outstanding athlete as well, showcasing a very strong, yet somewhat erratic arm at the hot corner and getting down to first base at 4.0-4.1 during the game and an even better runner underway. McFarland has legitimate five-tool potential and is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he can do during game action.
8-29-10 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/8/16/1625615/2010-under-armour-all-american#comments – Chris McFarland may be my guy from this event. Good hands, quick swing, stays inside the pitch, good actions all around and room to get stronger without compromising his wheels. Of all guys I saw, he and Delmonico were the ones who said ‘ballplayer’ while you watched them.
10-12-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=157 - McFarland is out of a different mold altogether. His best tools are actually his speed and his very quick bat, but many of us are unsure whether he has the arm or footwork to project as a big league shortstop. At third base, McFarland has shown plus defensive potential, for whatever reason it all works better there. McFarland has some righthanded power potential, but is more of a line-drive hitter. He has a chance to steal a lot of bases and can also play the outfield. How many base-stealing third basemen are there in the big leagues? Well, the New York Mets’ David Wright was the leader with 19 in 2010.

4-7-10 from: http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2253 - SS B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Mississippi): Vollmuth was one of the driving forces behind Southern Mississippi’s improbable CWS drive last spring, and has kept improving from there. He is hitting .400-7-32 this spring and has significantly improved his contact ratios. The 6-4, 200-pound Vollmuth projects to third base at the pro level as he struggles with his consistency at shortstop (13 errors this year, 13 errors in 27 games in the Cape Cod League last summer).

9-17-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2010/2610683.html - Will B.A. Vollmuth be a high draft pick? Can he stay at SS despite making error after error this year? Thanks guys! Aaron Fitt: Even after a brutal summer in the Cape League, I suspect Vollmuth will go in the top two or three rounds. His bat is his best tool—he's got some easy power potential, but he needs to be more selective, and his swing has some mechanical issues he needs to address. He's always been a work in progress at shortstop—he has the arm strength for it and he's a good athlete, but he remains very inconsistent defensively, and the consensus is that his future is at third base as he matures physically.
10-7-10: - http://www.draftsite.com/article/2011-MLB-Draft-Preview-College-Hitters/43 - Vollmouth, like many of the top college hitters in this class, has plenty of power. When watching him, his bat does not look extremely fast, but it is because his swing is very smooth, balanced and easy. His 6’4" frame also allows him to build up plenty of leverage to produce towering shots. Around the plate Vollmouth has very good coverage and is extremely patient, which helped him lead Southern Miss in walks. Interestingly, B.A. wears only one batting glove at the plate on his left hand. As great as Vollmouth is with the bat, defensively his game is somewhat flawed. Playing shortstop, he committed 24 errors in part due to so-so range to go with sub-par speed. His arm is strong and accurate though and with the lack of athleticism many predict he will end up at third base. It will be his bat that takes him to the next level, and if he can continue to produce, Vollmouth should be one of the top hitters selected.
10. Deven Marreno:
8-21-10 from: - http://projectprospect.com/article/2010/08/21/2010-cape-cod-wrapup - The defensive burden placed on shortstops puts them in high demand. Shortstops who can handle themselves with the glove and stick are always at a premium. Enter Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero. Marrero actually lead the Sun Devils in hitting last spring, posting a .397/.442/.628 line as a freshman. Playing for Cotuit in the Cape, Marrero hit .306/.385/.378. An above-average runner with solid range, smooth hands and a plus arm, Marrero has more than enough defensive ability to hold down shortstop long-term. His quick, simple swing should lead to consistently high batting averages with just enough patience to post quality on-base percentages. While there isn’t much in the way of power projection with Marrero, it’s hard to imagine a quality shortstop with his track record lasting too long on draft day.
11. Patrick Leonard:
12. Joe Panik:
8-2 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/08/02/cape-cod-baseball-league-players-of-the-week-6 - COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Joe Panik, Y-D IF - A stellar week has become even more memorable for Y-D shortstop Joe Panik (St. John’s). A few days after starting for the East in the Cape Cod League All-Star game at Fenway Park, he was named Coca Cola Player of the Week. On Wednesday, Panik was a top performer for the East, going 1-for-2 and throwing a runner out at home plate. Back on the Cape, he had a banner week, hitting .423, with one home run and seven RBI. As a sophomore at St. John’s, Panik’s .374 batting average and .477 on-base percentage were second on the team. He has led the Red Storm in walks in each of his two years, a skill that has transferred well to the Cape League: His patience has earned him the Y-D team lead in walks and on-base percentage.
10-26-10 from: - http://www.thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/10/26/joe-panik-st-johns-top-100-countdown-st-johns/#more-30699 - We continue the countdown today at number 81 with St. John’s junior shortstop Joe Panik. He is from Hopewell Junction, New York and attended John Jay High School. He was a four year letterwinner with the Patriots as he was a two-time team captain, two-time all-state selection, and two-time all-section honoree. As a senior he was named sectional, league and county player of the year while leading the team to a league championship.
As a freshman in 2009, Panik appeared in 50 games (49 starts) as he hit .332 with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 47 RBI while having a team high 29 walks. He was named a second team Freshman All-American by the NCBWA.
Panik continued his strong college career as a sophomore in 2010 as he finished second on the team with a .374 average while hitting ten homers and driving in 53 runs. He ended up finishing second on the team in slugging percentage (.621) and on-base percentage (.477) behind NCBWA Freshman of the Year Jeremy Baltz. He did struggle on defense as he made 15 errors for a fielding percentage of .949.
He spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox where he batted .276 with eight doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI in 42 regular season games. Panik also drew a team-best 20 walks, led the team with a .386 on-base percentage and was a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts. He was named a CCBL All-Star as he went 1-2 in the game. 13. Julius Gaines:
10-7-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=153 - But perhaps the most polished fielder of them all is #4-ranked Julius Gaines, the very lanky 5’10”, 154 lb shortstop from Luella HS in Georgia. Gaines has light feet, an average arm, very soft hands, and the ability to make plays both routine and difficult. He should always have a shortstop’s body which gives him as good a chance as any to stay at the position.
http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/blog.html - Day Four – WWBA - Julius Gaines (Luella HS, Locust Grove, Ga.) is slowly creeping into early-round discussions, backing up a lights-out Area Code Games showing with more stellar defense and productive at-bats in Jupiter. Gaines has plus arm strength to go with good range and smooth actions at shortstop. At the plate, he stays short to the ball, and he boasts plus speed out of the box.
14. Taylor Featherston –
3-15-10 from http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_houstoncollegeclassic.html - Top 10 Players (2011 Draft Class) - Taylor Featherston, SS, Texas Christian Univ. - Clean actions at short during infields and showed comfort there in-game, despite a couple of hiccups, and solid footwork around the baf; reached base in 7-10 plate appearances and showed some ability to drive the ball with good extension through contact but some length in his swing.

11-2-10 from: - http://www.thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/11/02/top-100-countdown-75-taylor-featherston-tcu - We continue the countdown today at number 75 with Taylor Featherston. He comes from Katy, Texas where he attended Taylor High School. He was a three year letter winner and was rated the 28th best prospect in Texas by Baseball America. Taylor’s sophomore season saw him start and appear in 60 out of the team’s 68 games. He finished with a .338 batting average while hitting eight homers and driving in 52 runs. He was part of the squad that made the school’s first appearance in the 2010 College World Series where the Horned Frogs finished tied for third. Featherston spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Brewster Whitecaps where he only appeared in ten games. He had a .267 batting average while driving in three runs. The biggest issue with Featherston since the beginning of his college career has been his defense. As a freshman in 2009, he made 27 errors for a fielding percentage of .909. He also struggled that summer in the NECBL as he made six errors for a fielding percentage of .941. Last season, he was slightly better making 16 errors for a fielding percentage of .947 in the college season while making five errors in the Cape in only five games.

Also has some pop in his bat, singles type hitter and better on the way runner. Seems he's grown up instead of out this year, he needs to add some strength and may be best to go 4 year route. Redan HS, Georgia.
7-18 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/7/17/1574115/all-questions-answered#comments - Projectable bat for average and power. Average runner with an above-average arm, and I think there’s a good chance he slides to third base in the long run or even the outfield. He’s going to add some strength, so it’s all about projection for him at this point.
7-29-10 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=8531042802 - Deion Williams played 3b on the day and had one of the hardest hit balls for a double over the LF head that hit the warning track some 335 feet away. He has that rangy body that should fill out with quick twitch muscles to be able to play where ever you want to put him, except behind the dish. He's said to play some SS today, we shall see.
7-31 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=8531042802 - Deion played his position well, I like his actions at SS more, but it's good to see he went out there and played 2b and 3b. He's so rangy in build and his arm is fluid that he could play anywhere. If I was a collegiate coach, I'd even tinker with putting him on the hill to see what he possesses because he learns so quickly and his arm has strength to it. His wriy build in time will fill out and he has raw strength. The ball jumped off the bat when he squared it up well and he made contact vs each pitcher he faced, albeit, he wasn't facing kids in the upper 80's and low 90's quite like he did at TOS. I didn't see the PG events he attended, so I don't know how he did there. He's on my list to see for the spring and I know he's on the list of many. One scout I'll leave anonymous told me he turned him in as a 48 follow, 48 overall future potential. He didn't blaze down the base line but we know he can run, just not quick out of the box like some flyers are. He can improve that time with some minor work.
8-12-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/high-school/events/under-armour-preseason-all-america-tournament/2010/2610524.html - IF - Redan HS, Stone Mountain, Ga. Williams is a tall, lean athlete with room to fill out. He has good first-step quickness at shortstop with sure hands and an above-average arm. He is aggressive at the plate and has good bat speed and should develop power as he matures. A competitor who likes to work, Williams' raw but physical tools are there for an impact bat at a premium position.

19. Austin Nola - LSU
12-23-9 fr. http://baseballdraftreport.com - SO SS Austin Nola (2011) gained notoriety during LSU’s championship run last season as a damn fine defender with an above-average arm. He showed just barely enough with the bat (.240/.350/.364 as a freshman in the SEC isn’t awful) to make him an interesting all-around prospect to watch going forward, rather than just another all glove, small bat player. Even if he doesn’t progress at the plate, he could still have himself a pro career. As the market for good defense continues to grow, players like Nola will likely see their draft stock get a boost. I also can’t be the only one who likes having a player on the premier baseball university in Louisiana with the last name “Nola,” right? I know LSU is in Baton Rouge and not New Orleans, but it still feels right.
6-13 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702 - SS, Austin Nola, 6'1 185, LSU, R/R, 70 arm, 55 range, solid glove, also ave runner and will hit 260 plus and occasional enough power to drive in runs, I like him more than CS-Fullerton MIF, Colon.
20. Brandon Martin:
9-3-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=144 - 61. Brandon Martin - MIF, 5'11" 163, R/R, Santiago HS (CA) - Polished and talented infielder with slashing line drive hitting approach, plays game with feel and energy, steady fielder but can make outstanding athletic plays, typical Cal State Fullerton "ballplayer"
21. Johnny Eiserman:
8-11-10 from: - http://baseballanalysts.com - Johnny Eierman (Warsaw, MO) is another speedster who had the second-fastest time in the 60 at 6.41. The 6-foot-1 shortstop and quarterback is coming off a junior year in which he was an all-state selection in baseball and football. The LSU commit slugged three home runs during batting practice on Thursday but has struck out in five of his last six plate appearances after going 2-for-3 with a triple in the first game. While Eierman doesn't lack for load or bat speed, he may need to alter his swing plane in order to make more contact at the next level.
22. Drew Stankiewicz

24. Addison Russell:
8-12-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/high-school/events/under-armour-preseason-all-america-tournament/2010/2610524.html - IF - Pace (Fla.) HS One of the most talented 2012 position players in the country, Russell has five-tool potential. He has smooth actions, soft hands and a plus arm at shortstop. At the plate he has serious bat speed as well as a solid combination of barrel accuracy and power. He makes it look easy.
8-16-10 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/8/16/1625615/2010-under-armour-all-american#storyjump - Addison Russell, SS, Pace HS (Fla.) - Uncommitted thus far as a top 2012 prospect, Russell was an absolute treat to watch both in the field and at the plate. You could make a legitimate argument that he is the top position player in high school right now, including the 2011 crop. Russell makes it look extremely easy in the field, complete with above-average to plus actions, arm, instincts and range. While not a plus runner, his athleticism plays up in the field, where his range is tremendous – showcasing it during infield practice. At the plate, Russell displayed some of the best bat speed at the event, and there’s little doubt he’ll be able to hit for both average and power at the next level. He’s a very aggressive hitter, and might need to cut a few steps during his load, but as for now, his hands are making up for any mechanical insufficiency he has. Russell has easy five-tool potential, and will be a top five pick in 2012.
8-16-10: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=130 - Addison Russell, SS, Pace HS (FL) - Russell is the best position player in the 2012 class, and he could make an argument to be the best infielder in the country, including the 2011 class. He plays a fantastic shortstop, with plus range, and a strong arm. He has all the tools, and his bat is very advanced. He has impressive bat speed, and the power is there. He is a top of the draft talent for 2012.
25. Jack Lopez:
10-4-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=151 - Jack Lopez, a shortstop from Deltona HS, continued to impress scouts, several of whom had followed him prior to the event. Lopez’s defensive skills were apparent on day one and on Sunday, he ripped an 85 MPH (with wood) hard off the left field wall for a double before getting thrown out at third. It’s not hard to see that bat-speed and power picking up considerably as he physically matures.
10-2-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=150 - Jack Lopez (Deltona HS) doesn’t have a lot of size (5’10”, 155 lbs) but is a slick fielder with righthanded bat-speed and draft potential.

10-29-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5086 - Hill was the best athlete in attendance. A compact 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, he demonstrates fast-twitch infielder’s actions and above-average speed under way. Hill is a switch-hitter who is better from the left side, showing more bat speed, less length and less uphill plane than he does from the right side. With average arm strength and hands, Hill profiles best as a second baseman, as his range and imprecise routes are not acceptable for shortstop. He is committed to South Carolina.
10-29-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5086 - SS Mikal Hill (Dirtbags):Hill turned in an MVP-type performance for the co-champion Dirtbags. Scouts have already figured out that Hill has outstanding range and excellent playmaking abilities in the middle infield but they couldn’t have helped been impressed with his bat, as the switch-hitter went 11-23 for the tournament.
27. Kenneth Gaines:
8-31-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=142 - Kenneth Gaines - SS, 5'11" 150, R/R, Luella HS (GA) - In some stretches Gaines was the most exciting player. He made ALL the plays at shortstop, in the hole, up the middle, across the diamond, turning the double play, plays on the move, all of them, and showed an average arm. Gaines made the WOW plays and the routine plays. He is a slasher who showed the ability to use the whole field, with the know how to drive in runs. He has near average speed on the bases. In some ways I felt like I was seeing a young Edgar Renteria.
28. Carlos Garmendia:
10-4-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=151 - Miami-bound Carlos Garmendia looked very fluid at shortstop again and he’s got quite a pesky right bat. Garmendia is a small-framed 5’11” or so, but has the athleticism and pop to play at a high level despite the lack of raw strength.
29. Troy Channing – St. Mary’s – 2009 .379/20-HR/79-RBI./723 slug/: .463 OBS… 9-E…
11-21-9 from www.collegebaseballblog.com: named the 60th top college player for the upcoming 2009 season
30. Darian Ramage
1-21-10 from www.baseballamerica: - From the class of 2011, some of the top players were . . . Darian Ramage, ss, Deer Valley HS, Glendale, Ariz.: Ramage is fast (6.75) and shows smooth fielding actions at shortstop. Exceptionally projectable, the switch-hitting Ramage will need time to develop as a hitter, for he needs to acquire substantially more strength, particularly in his hands and wrists
31. Tyler Grimes – Wichita State
1-28-10 from www.baseballdraftreport.com: - SS Tyler Grimes (2011) has spent the offseason working on a pretty nifty trick. He’s learning how to switch hit. That’s a far more impressive feat that whatever the heck I did between my freshman and sophomore years of college. That reminds me of a funny story…[story edited in order to maintain appearance that, yes, this is a family friendly website]…and that was the summer we learned a valuable lesson about Jon Favreau, organic peaches, nasty sunburns, and the power of love. Anyway, Grimes is coming off a darn fine freshman campaign. College numbers don’t tell the whole story, but a quick comparison between the freshman year numbers of the Wichita State shortstop and the consensus top college shortstops of 2009 and 2010 is interesting. Last season Grimes hit .294/.399/.467. In his freshman year, Grant Green, the top college shortstop off the board in 2009, hit .316/.388/.491. In Christian Colon’s first season, he hit .329/.406/.444. This ignores park factors, competition, and a slew of other important things to consider, but the raw rate stats are all pretty similar. Again, college numbers don’t tell the whole story. Grimes’s tools don’t match up with either Green’s or Colon’s, but he does appear to be a legitimate pro prospect in his own right. Grimes’s plus defense (good hands, great range, plus arm) will get him looks regardless of his development with the bat.
32. Brandon Loy –
3-15-10 from http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_houstoncollegeclassic.html - Top 10 Players (2011 Draft Class) - Brandon Loy, SS, Univ. of Texas - The best defensive infielder on the weekend, Loy showed plus hands and good accuracy from multiple angles at short; as with the rest of the Longhorns, the bat wasn't there for Loy on the whole, though he raked an 8th-inning offering from Wall for a game winning double to the left-center gap on Friday.
33. Taylor Motter
5-3-10 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/05/03/big-south-players-of-the-week-9 - - Coastal Carolina sophomore shortstop Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) has been named the Big South Conference’s Choice Hotels Player of the Week. Motter batted .462 (6-13) with eight RBI in four games last week for the Chanticleers. He had a hit in each game, starting with two hits in the 6-3 loss at No. 1 Virginia last Tuesday. He had a run-scoring triple in the game, and followed with three RBI, a double, walk and run scored in the Big South series opener against UNC Asheville. Motter went 2-4 with an RBI in Saturday’s win over the Bulldogs and ended the week going 1-3 with a double and three runs batted in on Sunday. He also played error-free defense at his shortstop position, handling 16 chances cleanly. For the week, Motter slugged .769 and posted a .467 on-base percentage.

36. Javier Baez:
7-3 from: - http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/07/03/early-follow-list-for-2011-mlb-draft - from Fanhouse.com MLB Draft guru Frankie Piliere – Javier Baez SS Arlington Country Day HS (Fla.) - Loud bat, big power to the middle of the field. Plus speed and good arm strength. Has the tools to stick at shortstop, but the bat stands out.
37. Shon Carson:
7-11 from: - http://sullydraft.blogspot.com – top ten high school middle fielders – 10. Shon Carson- Lake City HS
38. J.P. Crawford:

The team's starting shortstop, Crawford batted .410, had 50 hits and scored 49 runs in helping the Lancers post a 28-6 overall record.

7-13-10: - MaxPreps Junior All-American Baseball Team – SS Ricky Santiago, Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Infield - Santiago helped lead Flanagan to the 6A state title in Florida as he batted .420 with 23 RBI, 5 doubles and 4 home runs. He was also named to the All-Broward County team by the Miami Herald.
40. Tyrone Wiggins:
7-13-10: - MaxPreps Junior All-American Baseball Team – SS Tyrone Wiggins, El Capitan (Lakeside, Calif.), Infield - Filled up the stat sheet for the Division III champions in the San Diego Section. He led the section with 47 RBI and batted .462 with 13 home runs and 48 runs scored. Named to the all-section team.
41. Marcus Siemen:
7-21 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=4 - SS, Marcus Siemen, Cal, 6' 170, R/R, good defensive skills, solid ave runner, has some quickness in his bat, not much power at all, has gotten stronger since frosh year, was said to be 145 lbs coming out of HS, so he's added some strength apparently. His ticket will be his glove and bonus is if he can hit enough he may be able to steal a base or two as well. Intriguing.
42. KC Serna:
7-26 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=4 - Here are some names of draft eligibles for 2011 who have not been mentioned much and are definitely on the radar for 2011 MLB scouting depts. – Shortstops - KC Serna, Oregon, 6'0 185, R/R, strong arm and has ok speed, pop in his bat, also pitches, bat will decide where he goes, glove is adequate to stick at SS.
10-27-10 from: - http://www.thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/10/27/top-100-countdown-80-kc-serna-oregon - We continue the countdown today at number 80 with Oregon infielder KC Serna. He is 6’0 185 pounds out of Ventura California as he attended St. Bonaventure High School where he was a three sport athlete for the Seraphs, playing football and soccer in addition to baseball. As a senior in 2008, he was the starting shortstop leading the team to a 26-5 record. He spent time on the mound as he went 9-1 record with 76 strikeouts. On the offensive side of the ball, he hit .500 driving in 30 runs to go along with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 15 walks. He set several school records for career games played, RBIs, hits, doubles, steals and runs scored. KC Serna decided to head north to Oregon to play under George Horton in the first year of the Ducks program. During his freshman season in 2009, he started 52 games hitting .228 with 14 runs, five doubles, one triple, 14 walks and nine stolen bases. He led the team with 19 RBIs and three homers. Serna was a threat on the basepaths with nine stolen bases in 12 attempts. He was a little disappointing in the field as he led the team with 17 errors for .931 fielding percentage. He spent the summer of 2009 in the Northwoods League with the Mankato Moondogs where he was the starting shortstop. He ended up hitting .314 with 30 runs scored, 16 RBIs, 16 walks, seven doubles and two triples. He set the team record for stolen bases on the summer by stealing 25 bases in 27 attempts. He was named a Northwoods League All-Star for his performance.
43. Joel Sedden:
7-26 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=4 - Here are some names of draft eligibles for 2011 who have not been mentioned much and are definitely on the radar for 2011 MLB scouting depts. – Shortstops - Joel Sedden, St. Clair HS, Michigan, 6'1 170, R/R, solid arm strength and agile to left, soft hands, quick bat with occ pop, not a HR threat but is getting stronger each year.
44. Shain Stoner:
7-26 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=3221081702&p=4 - Here are some names of draft eligibles for 2011 who have not been mentioned much and are definitely on the radar for 2011 MLB scouting depts. – Shortstops - Shain Stoner, Southern Nazarene U., Idaho, 6'1 185, R/R, very good arm and power threat, one of top batting averages in NAIA in 2010, running speed is good for his size and may end up surprising many clubs next spring.
45. Matt Brandy:
10-18-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=165 - The Bullets played outstanding defense all game, lead by SS Matt Brandy (2011, Alonso). Brandy made every play at SS - including routine plays, slow rollers, and bang-bang plays. Every single one of his throws from shortstop was chest high over the bag for the first baseman, as he provided support for Chase Sparkman.
46. Jake Hager:
10-18-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=2984 - Two shortstops stood out on the final day of the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. The first is Jake Hager, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound shortstop from Sierra Vista High in Las Vegas. Hager hit a home run for Team Vegas in his first at-bat of the showcase and continued his hot hitting today, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. "The whole tournament, I saw the ball well," Hager said. "My swing felt good the whole weekend and I was confident through the whole weekend and just ready to play." Hager has been on scouts' radar for a couple years now. He benefitted from playing on the same high school team as righthander Nick Kingham, who was selected by the Pirates in the fourth round this year.
47. Corey Oswalt:
10-18-10 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=2984 - Two shortstops stood out on the final day of the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. The second shortstop is Corey Oswalt, a rising junior from Madison High in San Diego, who was on the SoCal Rays Scout Team. Oswalt stands out physically with his 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame. He generates good leverage in his swing and that was on display in his first at-bat today, as he hit a home run to left field. "I just wanted to go up there with a quiet approach at the plate and barrel up on something and drive it," Oswalt said. "It was a good pitch to handle and I got it." Oswalt played shortstop and center field today, but said he prefers shortstop because he likes being the leader on the field.
48. Garrett Wittels:
10-19-10 from: - http://www.thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/10/19/garrett-wittels-florida-international-top-100-countdown - Wittels had a breakout season in 2010 as he hit .412 with two homers and 60 RBI as he started all 56 games for the Panthers. In each of those games, he had at least one hit as he ended the season on a 56 game hitting streak which is the second longest in NCAA history only behind Oklahoma State’s Robin Ventura 58 games streak during the 1987 season. He improved on his defense as he made 13 errors in his 56 games while having a fielding percentage of .941. The Sun Belt honored him as the Conference Player of the Year and to the All-SBC Tournament Team. He was also named to several All-American teams by Baseball America (second base, third team), Louisville Slugger(third base, first team), PING! Baseball (utility, first team), American Baseball Coaches Association(ABCA)/Rawlings (utility, second team) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA)(second base, second team).
49. Gabriel Rosa:
10-17-10 from: - http://www.prospectwire.com/pw/article.php?id=162 - Perhaps the most impressive run-and-throw athlete on Friday was Gabriel Rosa, who actually hails from Puerto Rico and the International Baseball Academy. Normally a shortstop and one of the nation’s best defenders (ranking #3 overall at the position), Rosa only worked out and played left field on Friday. His arm grades a plus at both positions and the 6’3”, 173-pounder ran a blazing 6.58 60 yard-dash. The bat is much less a sure thing, but Rosa has an easy, well-balanced right-handed swing to grow into.
50. Scott Woodward:
10-25-10 from: - http://www.thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/10/25/scott-woodward-coastal-carolina-top-100-countdown - As a junior in 2010, he appeared in 64 games while hitting at a .324 average with five homers and 35 RBI. He continued to be a major threat on the basepaths as he stole 55 bases in 63 attempts. He spent the summer of 2010 with the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He appeared in 24 games while hitting .308 scoring 18 runs and driving in 3. His summer was cut short as he broke his foot just before the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game which he was named to the roster but was not able to participate.
51. Reed Seeley:
10-29-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5086 - SS Reed Seeley (Houston Heat): It’s been mentioned elsewhere about the very high level of shortstop play at this event and Seeley is part of that. The 6-1, 175 athlete has not been on the national stage much before, but he obviously belongs and was the Heat’s best player all weekend. Seeley hits with authority and is an agile, strong-armed shortstop who was also in the upper 80’s off the mound in a dominating pitching performance.
52. Justin Atkinson:
11-5-10: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5095 – WWBA stars - SS Justin Atkinson (Team British Columbia): Last year the big sensation on the Team British Columbia squad was C KellinDeglan and we all know how that turned out (Rangers 1st round pick, 22nd overall). The previously unheralded TBC player who stood out this year was Atkinson, a very athletic 6-3, 200 lb right-handed hitter with an impressive bat.
53. Trevor Story:
http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/blog.html - Day Four – WWBA - Shortstop Trevor Story (Irving HS, Irving, Texas), who teamed with Bell on the Dallas Patriots, also raised his stock for the spring. Story was 1-for-3 with a double on Day Three, maintaining his .333 tournament average while putting an advanced approach and compact swing on display. He also showed the ability to load up in hitters' counts, driving a long out to the left field wall after working a 2-0 count. At shortstop, he exhibited soft hands and arm strength suited for the left side of the infield.
10-29-10 from: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5086 - SS Trevor Story (Dallas Patriots): We keep waiting for the strong-armed Story to take the mound and show his stuff, where there are first-hand accounts of his throwing in the 94-96 mph range. That just isn’t going to happen, it seems. But it’s becoming evident that it doesn’t need to. Story swung the bat very well the entire event while playing his usual high-level defense. With all the scouts following teammate Josh Bell around the complex, most are sure to have an equally positive impression of Story.
