The Mack Draft Report - NCAA Rules on Verbals, Team USA Coaching, Matty Ott, SC Commitments, #31-40 Cape Cod, #41-50 JUCO, Austin Maddox, Cohl Walla, Gerrit Cole
Nov. 20, 2010
Verbals: 11-19-10 from Prospect Wire : - Many of you are familiar with NCAA rules regarding verbal commitments. For those of you who aren't, here is a quick breakdown because it is important to note. Up until July 1st of the summer leading up to your senior year of high school, a college coach can not call you. However, you can call him. Letters and emails can also be exchanged. Through these basic communications, colleges are locking up verbal commitments from players as early as their sophomore years. The most important summer for a high school baseball player going through the recruiting process used to be the summer after his junior year - as a rising senior. While for some players this is still true, the high end division-1 prospects continue to verbally commit to school during their junior years or as rising juniors.
USA Baseball: - 11-19-10 from: - Rivals - We are thrilled to announce Tim Jamieson as our 2011 manager,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams. “His experience from 2005 -- coaching players like David Price, Matt Wieters and Matt LaPorta -- will serve him well, and teaming him with Dave Van Horn, Scott Stricklin and Rob Walton will provide our athletes with a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best college coaches in the game. Once again, the college coaching community has rallied around the Collegiate National Team program."
Matty Ott – 11-19-10 from: - http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2010/11/19/top-100-countdown-60-matty-ott-lsu - As a freshman for the LSU Tigers in 2009, he served as the team’s closer as he helped win the 2009 National Championship for the Tigers by closing out Game 1 of the Championship Series against Texas. 31. ZACH CONE, of, Cotuit Kettleers (Georgia/JR in 2011) Has all physical tools in 6-3/210 frame, better approach/arm/defender/base stealer than 2009, but serious questions whether he’ll hit

38. NICK MARONDE, lhp, Falmouth Commodores (Florida/JR in 2011) Finally hit stride as go-to guy in Falmouth pen (2-0, 2.29); developed command of running 92-95 FB, but secondary pitches just OK

Austin Maddox: - 11-2-10 from: - http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/2010/11/top-25-under-25now-and-in-2015.html - 11. Austin Maddox, C/1B/3B, University of Florida - Where he came from: Maddox was a 37th round pick in 2009 and will be a 1st rounder in 2012. Why he’s here: Maddox has great power and will have to move to 1B down the line, but he will have the power for it. Maddox hit 17 HR's in his freshman season and that is just scrapping the surface. Maddox will not blow anyone away with his defensive prowess, but he hits the ball hard every time he hits it. Where he’s headed: Maddox will debut in 2015 and will hit for power right away. He will strike out a lot and won't walk enough for some but he could be an elite hitting 1B for a long time.
Cohl Walla: - 11-12-10 from: - http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2010/11/12/top-100-countdown-66-cohl-walla-texas - College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1. We continue the countdown today at number 66 with Texas sophomore outfielder Cohl Walla. The Austin TX native attended Lake Travis High School where he was a four year varsity letter winner while being a two-time captain. As a senior, he batted .435 with eight home runs as he went on to be named to the Third Team Class 4A All-State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Texas Sports Writers Association and District 25-4A Most Valuable Player. The Washington Nationals drafted Walla in the 43rd round of the 2009 MLB Draft but were not able to come to an agreement. Cohl stayed close to home as he continued his baseball career with the hometown Texas Longhorns. He had an immediate impact into the everyday lineup by playing in 62 games (52 starts) as he hit .316 with eight homers and 40 RBI. He was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 at the end of the 2010 season. He played in 31 games this summer with the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He finished the summer with a .259 average while driving in seven runs in the premier college baseball summer league.
Gerrit Cole: - 11-11-10 from: - http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/ - #2 - RHP Gerrit Cole UCLA 6'3 1/2 220 - power armed rhp with solid above ave fb that will reach 97-98 on occ, pitches at 92-94 consistently with run and sink on his fb, best when down in zone using the L on a hitter, hard slider 81-85 breaks properly sometimes too big, must stay within himself and not rush which can cause him to get his elbow down in position from his 3/4 arm slot. Could be in the ML quickly either as a closer or as a 2-3 man in the rotation. Still some roughness to iron out, but plenty of upside left in the tank with pro instruction.
