There are some definite in determining whether or not a baseball player has what it takes to be tagged “a prospect’. Naturally, five of them would be what we call “tools”.

One of the indefinites is blood line. Many scouts swear on sons of ex-MLB ballplayers, simply because of the perceived positives of lineage.

With that in mind, let’s talk about Orangewood Christian High School (Florida) infielder, Dante Bichette Jr.

Excellent raw power… 6-1, 215… named Central Florida Player of the Year by Orlando Sentinel… .597, 36-R, 37_RBI, 9-HR… committed to Georgia…

Had an excellent showing in the WWBA… good right-handed power… sure hands… excellent arm from left side of infield…

Needs to work on turning his raw talents into the next level… has a strange habit of changing his batting stance during the same at bat… needs to also work on bat speed… may just need more reps against secondary pitching to mature… hits off one foot too often…

Mock wise, Deep Leagues had him early on as the 29th overall pick in the 2011 draft… Hickey has him at 40th, MLB Prospects 23rd. For undetermined reasons, he had literally disappeared from the mocks, not being named in the last eight of them.

Right now, he’s ranked as the 4th top third baseman, but that would translate to around a late 3rd or early 4th round pick.

Bichette isn’t the only prospect that’s having a bad summer.

Rocky Mount (North Carolina) High School RHP Benton Moss had his fastball up to 94 in the spring, but it was reported nationally that it came in only in the high 80’s come summer time.

This fall, he pitched for the Dirtbags, and it was back in the low 90s. He also showed very affective breaking ball and excellent command of his pitches.

6-2, 170… sink on fast ball… also plays infield…

Rushes delivery sometimes… needs to fill out body… very projectable but probably should go to college (verbally committed to North Carolina) and mature.

Moss has only been mentioned in one mock draft so far this “season”, 122nd overall by Draft Site on October 1. It will be interesting to see if his name pops up now after his positive fall showing.

There are two separate national tryouts going on beginning Thursday and lasting through the weekend. Both are part of the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Training Select Training & Competition series.

The first is in Bradenton, Florida at Pirate City. The other will take place at Fitch Park, in Mesa, Arizona.

Andrew Susac
It looks to be a relatively talented pool of catchers available in the draft. One of them is Oregon State’s Andrew Susac.

Upon graduation from high school, the 6-1, 200 pounder was named the 40th player in the country by BA, 28th by PG, and 32nd by Baseball Factory.Yes, he was drafted (16th round, Phillies), but chose to attend college instead.

Poor showing (.208) in the West Coast Summer League, yet BA named him the top prospect in that league… 2009: .260, 2-HR, 13-R. Played in 2010 Cape Cod (.290/.393/.500, 5-HR, 15-RBI) Walked 12.6% of his at bats.

Considered a solid receiver… named best defensive catcher in the Cape League…

Questions regarding release from glove to hand and release point range…

Mock draft wise, Draft Site has him as the 79th overall pick in 2011, 5-Tool placed him 45th, and PG named him 21st; however, he has not been named to the last four mocks that have come out.

I have him as the 7th ranked catcher in the draft, which would translate to a probably 4th round pick.
