The Mack Report – The 2012 Plan and Type A Free Agents
I’m watching for the first time, in six years of blogging, “my” team begin to operate the way it hasn’t since the Frank Cashen days. This is really exciting and no one wants to be around more than I do during this period.
Both I and the New York Mets are operating on what I call a “2012 Plan”.
Mine is simple. I have to grow the site, both in content (having writers like David Rubin join me has been a blessing from God) and intelligence, so I continue to attract a more educated Mets fan and offer some day to sponsors, and subscribers, the kind of quality site even the New York Mets would be proud to be associated with.
I need a saber dude… I’ve got to find a tech guy who can convert this site to help me put some ching in my pocket… I’m still looking for local reporters in Brooklyn, Kingsport, St. Lucie, Buffalo, and Binghamton… they are all part of my 2011moperating plan called the “2012 Plan”.
In my opinion, The Mets, under their new leadership, will also be making all their decisions with the year 2012 in mind. We’ve discussed the cost of all the new guys, and the fact that the money saved from not having to pay K-Rod $3.5mil last season, took care of all that.
The problem still remains that the team is saddled with bad contracts that do not expire until the end of the 2011 season. These are not going to go away, people, and the Mets are not going to just write a check and wish these dudes success in the future. Maybe Luis Castillo, but definitely not Oliver Perez.
No, the Mets will not include Castillo, Perez, K-Rod, or Carlos Beltran in their 2012+ plans, but don’t be surprised if all of them aren’t in the dugout on opening day. Is releasing two players, still paying them $17mil, and using those two slots on the 25-man for newbies, part of the Moneyball plan?
Look, I’m signed on for the Sandy-train. This is big-time good stuff. But, this is heart transplant surgery and we’re still waiting for the helicopter to land on the top of our hospital from the poor bastard that had to die in order for our patient to live on.
So, a suggestion.
From this moment on…
Every time you hear someone ask if the Mets should do something…
Use the old Ronald Reagan spin and ask yourself… “will you be better off in 2012 with this decision?”
David Wright… yes.
Kevin Millwood… no.
Jenrry Mejia… yes.
Zach Lutz… no.
Ike Davis… yes.
Derek Jeter… hell, no.
You get the picture.
