Mack Draft: - Steven Starbird, Andrew Heck, Ricardo Jacquez, Willie Beard, and C.J. McElroy

Steven Starbird: - My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Steven Starbird of the Orlando Mavericks. Steven is a senior LHP from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. Steven is 6-0/175 pounds and hails from Rutledge, TN. Last season, Steven went 5-5, and had a 6.00 era in 87 innings pitched. He also led the Railsplitters with 73 strikeouts. Steven spent this past summer pitching for the Orlando Mavericks of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Steven was one of the best starting pitchers in the league. He led the league with 5 wins and he had a 2.63 era in 54.2 innings of work. He made 8 starts, allowed 46 hits and held opponents to a .230 batting average. He also led the league with 42 strikeouts. Steven was selected to pitch in the All-Star game as well. - http://www.collegesummerbaseball.net/2010/12/top-performers-from-2010-steven.html

My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Andrew Heck of the Hays Larks. Andrew is a 6-2/210 true two-way player from Oklahoma State University. He is a new transfer from Duquesne University after they cut their baseball program. He is a former First-Team All Big East Selection. Andrew hails from Pittsburgh, and he attended North Hills High School. Andrew returned to the Hays Larks for this 2nd summer stint with the Jayhawk League. Andrew was a two-way star for the Larks. Offensively, he hit .293 in 92 at-bats. He had 27 hits, 8 doubles, 1 triple and smacked 5 home runs. He also added 26 runs batted in.- http://www.collegesummerbaseball.net/2010/12/top-performers-from-2010-andrew-heck.html

Ricardo Jacquez - rhp  - Franklin HS, El Paso, Texas - Jacquez is an undersized hurler with a big arm, capable of touching 94 mph of the strength of his arm speed. His curve lacks big depth, but comes with good velocity (upper-70s and as high as 80 mph) and hard, late bite. He lacks the size to start as a pro, but could develop into a solid late-inning arm. He is also an impressive draft prospect at shortstop. http://diamondscapescouting.com/articles_2010acg_wraps_part1_11162010.html

JR RHP Willie Beard, after throwing up a less than stellar 8.57 FIP in 35.2 IP last season, needs a better junior season to get back on the map. Insightful commentary, I know. The point I am clumsily trying to make is that Beard, a player who scouts actually said nice things about as a freshman, is not without talent despite his poor sophomore season. I don’t think he is a draftable talent – short righthanded pitchers either need above-average stuff, dominating numbers, or, in many instances, both to get noticed – but he can be filed away as a deep, deep, deep sleeper if you’re into that sort of thing. -- http://baseballdraftreport.com/

C.J. McElroy - of - Clear Creek HS, League City, Texas - McElroy showed some of the best speed out of the box at the event, clocking one home-to-first at 4.09 from the right side, as well as a number of sub-4.2 times. He is a slasher at the plate that does a solid job of putting the ball in play, including by bunt, and can beat out hits off the strength of his speed. Defensively, he has the range and the reads to project as a center fielder, though evaluators are likely to be split on whether the arm is there to hold down the 8-spot as a pro. He moves well in the field and is not afraid to leave his feet to make the play, be it to his side or charging-in. http://diamondscapescouting.com/articles_2010acg_wraps_part1_11162010.html
