Cutnpaste: - Dylan Owen, Chasing Stars, Alfredo Simon, Jose Reyes, and Bret Saberhagen

Dylan Owen:

It may not be as exciting as Roy Halladay pitching a no hitter in his first playoff game, but in the world of Dylan Owen his no hit gem was just as sweet in the Puerto Rico playoff opener, though he did need help in the last two innings from Eddy Ramos and Saul Rivera to complete the job. Carolina also made five errors in the 5-0 loss to Caguas, three of them by third baseman Jeffrey Dominguez. Owen just recently joined the Criollos, tossing five shutout innings in his only two appearances during the regular season. He is a product of the New York Mets system, drafted by them in the 20th round in 2007. He walked two and struck out three. He walked Pedro Valdes to lead off the top of the second to ruin his perfect game. The biggest offense for the Criollos was the porous gloves of the Gigantes defense, their five errors allowing four of the five runs to score to be unearned - myworldofbaseball.

Chasing Stars:

First, those analysts who moved from “low-rated firms to high-rated firms” improved their performance, for they were surrounded in their new jobs by more plentiful and useful resources. The Mets, with a 2011 payroll that’s on course to exceed $130 million in spite of a relatively dormant offseason, represent an upgrade in that regard for Messrs. Alderson, DePodesta and Ricciardi. From 2006 to 2009, Mr. Alderson, as chief operating officer, and Mr. DePodesta, as a baseball-operations executive, collaborated in running the San Diego Padres, whose payroll never topped $74 million in any of those years, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, a website that tracks major-league players’ salary information. - baseballmusings

Alfredo Simon:

Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is the main suspect in a fatal shooting New Year's Eve in the Dominican Republic, police said Sunday. The pitcher is suspected of killing 25-year-old Michel Castillo Almonte and wounding his 17-year-old brother during a celebration in the northeast coastal town of Luperon, police said in a statement. No motive was disclosed. Simon is from the Dominican Republic, and police said he fled after the violence. - sportsillustrated.

Jose Reyes:

If he repeats last season, Reyes is worth a tick more than the $11 million he’ll make; he’s also likely be a type-A free agent at the end of the year, netting his former team two valuable draft picks if he signs elsewhere. The two potential draft picks and a severe shortage of talented shortstops bumps his value way up — if the Mets consider moving Reyes at the trading deadline this season, the bidding might become too insane not to do it. I can envision Brian Sabean and Doug Melvin having a contest to see who can destroy the remainder of their farm system first. - bleacherreport.

Bret Saberhagen:

Had some dominant performances, but was injured, and better known for that foolish bleach incident in the clubhouse. If not for the ’94 strike, might have had one of the best pitching season in Mets history. Was 14-4 with a 2.74 ERA in a very offensive year, and walked only 13 batters in 177 innings. Yes, that isn’t a typo, 13 batters. The return the Mets got from Colorado in that midseason trade in ’95 was abysmal. Overall had a 3.16 ERA during his Mets career, and would have been right up there with some of the best pitchers if he stayed healthy. - link
