The Mets signed two pitchers yesterday, Taylor Buchholz and Chris Capuano.
This is the time of the year where teams fill their spring training lockers with a bunch of guys that might light up a fire in March. Omar liked ex-first round draft picks, while Mr. Alderson seems to like proven ex-MLB players that fell to injuries.
I like both pitchers, but I have no idea what the deals are. I’m going to assume both will be added to the 25-man, which totally fills the pen up. Actually, it makes it one over (Francesco Rodriquez, Robert Parnell, Oliver Perez, D.J. Carrasco, Pedro Beato, Pat Misch, Buchholz, and Capuano).
My guess is Misch will wind up back at Buffalo as one of the five rotational pitchers, and be the emergency SP6, with an overnight bag packed in his Bisons locker. This, of course, happens if all the new guys listed above make it out of spring training as members of the parent squad.
Sure looks like the new pen is set.
The good news is we haven’t thrown in either Jose De La Torre, Manny Alvarez, or Michael O’Connor into the picture, and any or all of these three could kick ass in the spring, which would create quite the positive problem for the Mets.
I particularly like the Buchholz signing. He was virtually unhittable in 2008 for Colorado (0.95 WHIP), on a home field mound not known for being kind to pitchers. You would be dancing in the hallways if the Mets signed him right after that season.
The Mets also had to designate Ryota Igarashi to make room for the new guys. He’s still owed over a mil for 2011 and, trust me, after the way he pitched last year, no one will sign him and he’ll be the highest paid player on the Buffalo roster in this coming season.
More baby steps.
The good thing is baby steps don’t hurt you, but it’s far too early to determine if any of these new faces can run a marathon.
