Portland 4, Binghamton 2

The Portland Sea Dogs scored two runs in the first two innings and added two more in the last two innings to defeat Binghamton 4-2 at NYSEG Stadium tonight.

Portland jumped on B-Mets starter Collin McHugh from the get-go. Ryan Khoury led off the game with a double down the third base line. He advanced to third on a ground out and came home on Chih-Hsien Chiang’s single. The RBI bumped Chiang’s league-leading total to 74.

The Sea Dogs doubled their lead in the second. Tim Federowicz led off by shooting a two-bagger to the left field corner. He was sacrificed to third by Mitch Dening and scored on a sac fly by Oscar Tejeda.

After two scoreless innings, Binghamton got on the board in the third. Matt den Dekker and Reese Havens led off with back-to-back singles against starter Chris Balcom-Miller. The rally was nearly killed when Jordany Valdespin lined into double play. Jon Hee snared Valdespin’s screamer at first base and stepped on the bag to double off Havens.

The next batter, Brahiam Maldonado, got the job done. The designated hitter collected his team-leading 54th RBI of the year on a ground-rule double to left-centerfield. The drive was originally called a home run, but was overturned after a discussion among the umpires. B-Met manager Wally Backman argued the changed ruling and was ejected by Jon Saphire in the process.

Collin McHugh settled down after the two bumpy innings and got through six. After allowing a single to Khoury in the third, he retired eleven of the final twelve Sea Dogs he faced. The righty finished with seven strike outs and just one walk.

Binghamton had a chance to tie it in the sixth, but reliever Kyle Fernandes struck out Eric Campbell to end the threat. After Jack Egbert tossed a perfect seventh, Binghamton took McHugh off the hook in the bottom half of the frame.

Fernandes hit den Dekker with a pitch, but bounced back to strike out Reese Havens for the second out. With Valdespin at the plate, den Dekker stole second, his sixth swipe of the year. The theft proved fruitful when Valdespin plated den Dekker with a single to right field to tie the game at two. Maldonado was intentionally walked and the move paid off when Allan Dykstra struck out looking to end the inning. Dykstra was ejected by home plate umpire Andy Dudones for arguing the call.

The contest would not remain knotted for long. Egbert quickly got the first two outs of the eighth inning before allowing a single to Khoury. The right-hander attempted a pick-off throw, but was called for a balk. It was the first balk of his eight-year professional career.

The misstep came back to haunt the reliever. With a runner now in scoring position, Alex Hassan gave Portland the lead for good by ripping a single up the middle to score Khoury.

Fernandes got two quick outs in the eighth before being relieved by Blake Maxwell. The righty induced Eric Campbell to fly out to right to end the inning. Campbell took an 0-for-3 day at the plate and saw his hitting streak end at 10 games.

Tim Federowicz gave Maxwell more breathing room with a solo home run off Egbert in the ninth. In the bottom of the frame, the closer worked around a two-out single by Reese Havens to nail down his tenth save of the year and make a winner of Fernandes for the first time. Egbert suffered his first loss.
