St. Lucie 8, Ft. Myers 5

The St. Lucie Mets were able to salvage a series split with the Ft. Myers Miracle Thursday night at Digital Domain Park. The 5-1 win puts the Mets at 8-5 on the second half and 46-37 overall.

St. Lucie pitchers Darin Gorski, Estarlin Morel and Eric Niesen combined to hold the Miracle to only one run on seven hits en route to their 5-1 victory. The Mets jumped on the scoreboard early. Juan Lagares, the FSL’s league leader in hitting, doubled and would come around to score on a pass ball giving the Mets an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. After five solid innings, Gorski ran into trouble in the sixth inning allowing the first four batters of the frame to reach base evening the score 1-1. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Gorski induced a key double play ground ball and then struck out the last batter of the inning to get the Mets out of the jam with limited damage. St. Lucie responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Wilmer Flores hit a two-run home run and Dock Doyle doubled in a run to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. St. Lucie tacked one more run on in the eighth inning to make it a 5-1 game which would be the final.

Darin Gorski improved to 8-0 with the win striking out four and allowing only one run while scattering six hits over six innings. Estarlin Morel pitched two solid innings and Eric Niesen tossed a perfect ninth to seal the Mets win. Wilmer Flores led the Mets offensively with two hits including his sixth home run of the season. Corey Vaughn and Stefan Welch both added two hits and a run scored in the win.

The Mets kick off a four-game series with the Tampa Yankees Friday night at Digital Domain Park. Kyle Allen gets the start for the Mets. Allen comes into the game with a 3-3 record and 5.49 ERA in 15 appearances, ten starts. Allen has struck out 41 while walking 37 with opposing batters hitting .278 against him in 59 innings of work.
