B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

LAST GAME: The B-Mets squandered a three-run lead, but took the rubber match over the New Britain Rock Cats by an 8-7 score on Jon Malo’s walk-off sac fly in the ninth inning last night at NYSEG Stadium. Allan Dykstra gave Binghamton a 6-3 lead in the third inning by bouncing the B-Mets’ first grand slam off the right field foul pole. Robert Carson allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings. Ricky Brooks allowed one hit over two scoreless innings. Josh Stinson took over in the eighth and allowed a pair of runs on three singles and two sac flies. Steve Hirschfeld walked Kai Gronauer to start the ninth. Mike Fisher pinch-ran for the catcher, moved to second on a sac fly, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Malo’s fly to right.



STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Jeurys Familia makes his 14th start of the season and second against the Sea Dogs. Familia fanned seven Richmond Flying Squirrels over five shut-out innings in a win in his most recent start on August 13. He allowed just two singles and did not walk a batter. The right-hander earned his first Double-A win against Portland on July 4, striking out six over five shutout innings.


RHP Miguel Gonzalez will make his sixth start this season with the Sea Dogs and second appearance against Binghamton. The righty had a late start to his season, making his first appear-ance with the Salem Red Sox (Lo-A) in early May. He made one start with Portland on May 14, before being promoted to the Pawtucket Red Sox for one game (5/20). Gonzalez took the loss in his last start on August 12 against the Erie SeaWolves. He gave up four runs on six hits over four innings. Gonzalez was acquired by the Red Sox in the Rule V Draft in 2008.


BLASTING AWAY: B-Mets designated hitter Allan Dykstra gave Binghamton the lead with his grand slam in the third inning last night. It was Dykstra’s third career grand slam. His first came on 8/30/08 as a member of the Lake Elsinore Storm. His most recent came on 5/6/09 with the Fort Wane TinCaps. It was Binghamton’s first grand slam of the year. Their last was hit by Raul Reyes on 6/29/10 against the Altoona Curve.


DÉJÀ VU: The B-Mets and Portland Sea Dogs start their three-game series tied for fifth in the Eastern Division. The teams started their most recent series at NYSEG Stadium on July 25 tied for fifth in the division. Portland took two games in the series and left with 5th place.


STREAKING ALONG: Binghamton’s win last night was their third straight victory in a rubber match. They have won four straight series, their longest stretch of the season. The B-Mets have only won one series against Portland this year.
