B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

LAST GAME: Jeurys Familia struck out seven Portland Sea Dogs and Brahiam Maldonado crushed Binghamton’s second grand slam in as many days in a 10-1 win last night at Hadlock Field. The teams waited through a 60-minute rain delay before Bing-hamton grabbed a two-run lead against Miguel Gonzalez in the second. The B-Mets added five more in the fifth. Maldonado blasted his home run over the Maine Monster off reliever Eam-mon Portice. Familia cruised through six shutout innings, allow-ing only one hit and walking two. Jack Egbert allowed one run over three innings to pick up his fourth win and make Familia a winner for the fourth time this year.



STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh makes his 14th start of the season and third against the Sea Dogs. The right-hander is on a five-game winning streak. He beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels in his most recent start on August 14. McHugh allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. He has held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last seven appearances (one relief outing).


RHP Charlie Haeger will make his fifth start with the Sea Dogs and first against the B-Mets. The knuckleballer was released by the Seattle Mariners in mid-July after going 2-2 with a 7.74 ERA in nine start with the Tacoma Rainers (SEA: AAA). The Red Sox signed him on July 24. He took a no-decision against the Erie SeaWolves in his most recent start on August 14. The righty allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings.


GRAND SLAM KING: B-Mets outfielder Brahiam Maldonado’s grand slam in the fifth inning last night was the fifth of his ca-reer. His last came against the New Britain Rock Cats on 6/24/10. Maldonado launched three grand slams with the St. Lucie Mets (Hi-A) in 2009.


SETTING THE BAR HIGHER: Allan Dykstra ripped his second home run in as many days in the ninth inning last night. The blast, his 17th of the season, set a new career-high. He hit 16 with the Lake Elsinore Storm (SDP: Hi-A) last year.


OFFENSE ALIVE IN AUGUST: The B-Mets have hit .303 as a team in the month of August, the highest batting average in the Eastern League. Reese Havens has led the charge, hitting .396 (19-48) in 14 games. Juan Lagares has a .377 (23-61) over 14 games. Binghamton has hit 20 home runs in 16 games.


LAGARES IS STREAKING: Juan Lagares’ single in the eighth inning extended his hitting streak to ten games, tied with Eric Campbell and Jordany Valdespin for a B-Met season-high. Laga-res has gone 18-for-46 (.391) during the streak
