Steve:
Hey Mack I was reading L.A Dodgers wants Daniel Murphy? Who else besides Murphy do you give up to get Zack Lee? Or is there another player from la you'd want? I know your 1st option is to get a catcher? How about trading with Toronto? Say Parnell and Duda for Travis D'arnauld and Noah Syndergaard?
Mack:
Well, first of all, I don’t “do” hypothetical trades. They’re enough real ones that don’t make sense to me so I don’t need to go in this direction.
I will say this… it would take a shitload to get Lee away from the Dodgers. Perception is reality when it comes to prospects and the LAD brass reads the pundits as well. Lee is the top prospect in an organization that has very little top talent in their pipeline right now.
I would approach the off-season in a different way if I was the Mets.
I would take the time to target ten players I would like in my organization, be them prospects or already on the parent team.
I would then make a list of three tiers of players I would offer in a trade. Off the top, mine would be:
Tier One: - Daniel Murphy, Justin Turner, Jason Bay (sic), Mike Pelfrey, Bobby Parnell, Wilmer Flores, Jordany Valdespin
Tier Two: - Fernando Martinez, Josh Satin, Dillon Gee, Collin McHugh, Darin Gorski, Robert Carson, Brad Holt, Eric Beaulac, Jefry Marte, Juan Lagares, Pedro Zapata
Tier Three: - Mark Cohoon, Collon McHugh, Dylan Owen, Armondo Rodriguez, Taylor Whitenton, Greg Peavey, Gonzalez German, Yohan Almonte, Josh Stinson
I would then offer each team one player from each tier for the player I was going after.
Would I get who I wanted? Would I have to sweeten the pot?
I’ve got to think there are three players listed above that could pry away one of the Cincinnati catcher prospects.
If not, I would think I could start off with Jeurys Famila and get that deal done.
Valdestin, Gorski, and Peavey. Thats who im asking for if I'm the reds. But they are in a win now mode. Votto and Bruce are probably getting expensive. They'd probably want major league ready talent. Niese and someone from the top tier might do it. Would you do that Mack?
ReplyDeleteCharles, all three of guys you mentioned can be lived without... I love all three but they aren't stone cold locked prospects.
ReplyDeleteYour roster can't be more than 25 players.
And you have 300+ in your organization to figure it out.
Use them to benefit your needs, but always, always, always build your team around starters.
If your system has a great 5-man rotation and you have 5 more studs in AAA/AA, you can get anybody you want.
Charles I don't think that gets it done. Not for one of their stud catchers. They'd demand a Niese or a Familia in there as well.
ReplyDeleteGorski might be a sell-high but I hope I'm wrong and he keeps using his great control, continues to build arm strength, and can become a legitimate starting prospects this year. He could come out of nowhere and be the "forgotten" pitching prospect overshadowed by the Big Four who rounds out that rotation. He could regress to a AAAA player. We won't know. Mack..thoughts? Sell high or keeper?
Steven & Charles:
ReplyDeleteI can't see the Red trading either of their top catchers for nothing less than another team's top prospect, regardless of position.
This is going to cost the Mets either Wheeler, Haervey, or, possibly, Familia... plus more
IMO
Steve, I did say that I highly doubted a player from each tier would make that trade possible. I just said hypothetically who I'd pick from each if I had to choose. I also said because they're competing for their division now, it would probably take Niese plus some one else to get one of their catching prospects, if they'd even be willing to trade one.
ReplyDeleteMack, I understand all that. The question is whether Sandy would be willing to part with one of his to five to get one of someone else's top five. I doubt it. He's basically said that the top four or five are untouchable at the winter meetings. That's why he'll look into trading major league talent. That's why teams like the Reds are good fit's. Because the Reds won their division just two seasons ago and are in win now mode before they can't afford Votto and Bruce(especially Votto). They also have some good young pitching that will be getting pretty pricey real soon. Now's the time for them.
ReplyDeleteI agree Charles, the Reds have a short window with Votto leaving in two years - 1 if they decide to trade him to get something other than draft picks in return.
ReplyDeleteThe Reds will probably want ML talent as well as prospects.
I find it a bit disconcerting that people are so free about trading Flores. I still think he can be a true plus bat at a corner.
