Fernando Martinez and Daniel Herrera have both been put on waivers, a source told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Earlier today, Rubin said he expected either Martinez, Herrera, RHP Armando Rodriguez, RHP D.J. Carrasco, RHP Jeremy Hefner, RHP Chris Schwinden, IF Josh Satin and IF Justin Turner could be cut and put on waivers.

Martinez hit .260 with eight HR and 30 RBI in 223 at-bats at Triple-A Buffalo, while batting .227 in 11 games with the Mets.

According to Rubin, Herrera can declare free agency rather than report to the minors if he clears waivers.

  1. This angers me. We keep a guy like Carrasco and potentially lose a guy who still had a glimmer of prospect status. I don't care if F-Mart is worthless from here unto forever... this was a BAD baseball decision for a team who needs youth to succeed.

  2. I agree. I don't like it. How do you let him go for nothing? He's only 23, you have to give him another shot to stay healthy and see if he can reach his potential. And if you really didn't want him, couldn't you find something of value for him?

  3. Well, two things...

    1. He may be back. It's obvious that the Mets are trying to slip him through. Thanks to Rubin, the world knows now. Also, if claimed, the Mets can withdraw the name.

    2. If he is gone... and Nieuwenhuis isn't healed yet... it's a lean OF in Buffalo come April.

  4. Wow...actually breaks my heart. I remember in 05 when they signed Beltran and everyone thought him, F- Mart, and Carlos Gomez would be their.outfield of the future. You just.never know. Really hoped he'd be healthy and a viable power threat off the bench. Maybe even grow into a better role. Hope he clears. If not, I'd pull him back and cut Carrasco.

    "prospects can get you fired..."

  6. Wow I would have cut Carrasco but Mack makes a great point that the Mets could withdraw the waiver if Martinez is claimed. What we don't know is why F-Mart mysteriously disappeared from the winter leagues after only a handful of at bats. Mark

  7. F-Mart had that coming. He'll go on to be the next Ken Singleton now.

  8. You think Omar is going to recommend putting a claim in for him?

  9. No way they let him go for nothing...Even Eddie Kunz had trade value

  10. Makes you realize how difficult it is for a prospect to actually live up to the hype and become a star. Something to remember as we look at all of our "baubles" in the minors now........

  12. @CHARLES If Im not mistaken this is an "outright" waiver which means that it is irrevocable. If he passes he passes, if not he's gone. This might be a situation where Alderson is banking on his huge drop in value to sneak him off the 40 man without a team claiming him.
