- The signing of Prince Fielder definitely changes the future for prospect 1B Aaron Westlake. Frankly, it could also affect 3B Nick Castellanos, but Westlake's agent most definitely needs to look for way out of Detroit. He did get off to a slow start in A-ball last season, but he projects out as a 30/80 guy someday.
First base – Aaron Westlake (23): After hitting 0.344/.463/.640, 18 2B, 18 HR, 47 BB and 54 SO in 66 games for Vanderbilt, Westlake was selected in the 3rd round of the June draft. He has a power bat, above-average bat speed and an idea of what he’s doing at the plate. To top it all off he’s also an excellent defensive first basemen. However, it’s not all sunshine and roses here as Westlake failed to impress during his 27 games stint in the New York-Penn League after signing. The power and plate discipline didn’t follow him from college but we can dismiss some of that due to the transition as well as the small sample size. Already 23-years old, he needs to move quickly to maximize his value and we still don’t know if his game will translate to professional ball. With Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and now Prince Fielder all signed through at least 2014 one has to wonder what his potential impact could be even if he puts it together and cruises through the minors.
- There is a good chance that 2012 will be the last year Russell Martin catches for the Yankees. He avoided arbitration by singing a one-year deal before he is eligible for free agency in 2013. Also catching prospect Gary Sanchez will be ready to move to the Bronx, with fellow prospect Austin Romine right behind him.
- Adrián Almeida is a 16-year old Venezuelan LHP that was signed yesterday by the Mets. The Mets twitter world went bat shit trying to figure out who he was. Finally, Adam Rubin managed to find this:
$170G isn't that big of a bonus number and since no one ever heard of the kid before, we'll have to wait and see what the team got here.
- the voting for the Mets "fan favorite" (poll on the right side of page one of this site) has become a race between Ike Davis, David Wright, and RA Dickey. I thought Wright would win this hands down, but it seems that times are a changing. I wish that the blogger site had allowed me to list more than three names
- Lastly, I seem to have a stalker on this site. His name on the site is "Matt"and he used to write nice stuff. He then started to get a little snarly and I told him to fuck off, which got me where I am today. I've contacted Blogger who should be able to give me his name and location, but, until then, I have to live with his insults. I apologize to all of you for this and I'll try and erase his thoughts as soon as they come in.
I have no fear of this Matt as I'm fairly certain he isn't standing right behind-
