Mack On… The Montero Trade

Mets fans must be really pissed this weekend.

The dreaded Yankees went out and traded Jesus Montero to Seattle for pitcher SP Michael Pineda. They followed this up with signing SP Hiroki Kuroda to a one year contract and all is well in the Yankees rotation.

Mets fans everywhere started posting, ‘why can’t the Mets do this’?

Actually, they could have, but it would have taken the trading of a ‘young, major league power hitter’ with credentials. Currently, the Mets have one and a half of these.

Lucas Duda would not have been enough to get someone like Pineda, but Ike Davis would have turned the trick. The problem is he currently is the only young Met ballplayer that has the drawing power to pull off a big trade.

In the case of Montero, he was only one of three (Gary Sanchez, Austin Romine) Yankee prospect catchers. They also have Russell Martin .

The Mets have this kind of positional debt at only one position, starting pitching, but the debt is still at minor league levels.

But, there is good news Mets fans.

Get through the 2012 season and there is a possibility that four (Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia) ‘B’ to ‘A’ rated pitchers will be ready to play in the majors.

Now, Sandy and Company will be able to approach teams, by position, and fill in the team’s needs.
