Mets Bio - Benny Agbayani Jr.
More than any other player, Benny Agbayani Jr. represents Hawaii’s mélange of peoples and cultures. “Benny is chop suey,” his mother quipped in 1999. His surname is Filipino; his paternal grandparents came from the province of Ilocos Norte on the island of Luzon, around the late 1920s or early 1930s. Emigration from the Philippines began in 1906 when the Hawaiian Sugarplanters Association began recruiting pukankeyn (the Ilocano word for cane cutters).The Ilocanos were perhaps the poorest and most disadvantaged of all the immigrants in Hawaii, so the underdog associations stretch back
