D1 - Monday Recaps


·         Kentucky (3-0) sophomore southpaw Corey Littrell worked a career-long seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and fanning a career-best eight, leading the Wildcats to a 6-0 win over host USC Upstate, on a sunny Monday afternoon at Harley Park.[i]



·         DC Legg (R-Sr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) became the fifth CSU Bakersfield baseball player to hit two home runs in a single game (the first since 2010) as the Roadrunners defeated Kansas State 8-1 Monday afternoon at Hardt Field.[ii]



·         For the first time in three attempts, Oregon will depart Hawaii with a series win as the Ducks defeated the Rainbows, 12-6, on Monday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The Ducks (3-1) will leave Honolulu with a 3-1 series win after batting .335 against Hawai’i (1-3) and totaling 30 runs in four games. Junior J.J. Altobelli led the Ducks with a 5-for-6 performance, which included three doubles – the most any Oregon player has produced in a single game since the program was reinstated in 2009.[iii]



·         Ben Burke struck out three batters in three complete innings, Brett Morgan and Ryan Allgrove each recorded two hits and Alex Lipson turned a triple play in the third inning to help the UC Davis baseball team claim a thrilling 9-8 extra-inning victory over Utah on Monday at Dobbins Stadium.  UC Davis moves to 3-1 overall while Utah drops to 1-3 overall



·         The UNLV baseball team picked up its second win this opening weekend, handing UC Irvine their first loss of the season, 3-2 here today at Anteater Ballpark.  

Freshman Erick Fedde (1-0) earned his first win, allowing just five hits over six innings of work and striking out three. Mark Shannon picked up his first save, giving up one hit over two innings of work with two strikeouts.[iv]



·         Belmont Abbey catcher Kyle Buchanan broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle in the top of the 11th, and Gabby Amor plated Buchanan with a single as the Crusaders upset No. 7 Francis Marion on Tuesday.[v] It is the Abbey's second win against a nationally-ranked team this year as it moves to 7-3, while Francis Marion drops to 4-3.



·         Brian Ragira had his second consecutive three-hit day, while Kenny Diekroeger and Eric Smith had two hits a piece as No. 4 Stanford (2-0) will look for the sweep on Sunday following a 9-5 win against visiting No. 11 Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon[vi]



·         Senior Jeff McVaney and junior Nick Smelser combined for seven hits, five runs and four RBIs to help power the Texas State baseball team past Louisiana-Lafayette, 9-5, on Monday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark. The win was the second straight for Texas State, which is now 2-1 to begin the 2012 campaign.[vii]
