D1 - Saturday Game Notes


    

·         GSU OF Victor Roache left today's game with an injury and was take to the hospital. His left arm was immobilized with an air cast before leaving the field. Late reports are that his left hand has been fractured below the wrist and will be operated on next week. It was hurt when he dived for a ball.
·         One of the seniors that are stepping up this season is Florida State’s James Ramsey.  So far this season, he’s gone 11-19, 3-HR, 9-RBI, 13-BB. Last year he led the Seminoles in batting average (.364), hits (91), RBI (67), total bases (145), stolen bases (11) and slugging percentage (.580) and shared the team lead in home runs (10) and runs scored (58).

·         Jesuit’s RHP Lance McCullers started, threw 5 innings in a combined no-hitter today .

·         Right now, my top RHPs in the draft are (in order): Lucas Giolito, Kevin Gausman, Mark Appel, Lance McCullers, Walker Weickel, Marcus Stroman, Michael Wacha, Michael Roth, Kyle Zimmer, Austin Maddox    




·         Senior Preston Tucker (Tampa, Fla.) became Florida’s career RBI leader and junior Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) (1-0) carried a shutout into the seventh inning as the top-ranked Gators (6-1) clinched their weekend series with a 5-1 victory over William & Mary (2-4) on Saturday afternoon at McKethan Stadium.[i] 

·         Three South Carolina pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and the second ranked Gamecocks held off a late Elon rally to earn a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in front of 7,606 fans at Carolina Stadium. South Carolina is now 5-0 on the year with Elon dropping to 4-2 for the season[ii] 

·         Brett Mooneyham (2-0) struck out seven over eight innings and Kenny Diekroeger and Jake Stewart each had three hits to lead No. 2-ranked Stanford (6-0) to its sixth-straight win to start the year following a 6-2 series clincher over No. 7-ranked Texas (2-4) on Saturday afternoon.[iii] 

·         No. 4 Arkansas overcame an early 3-0 deficit and Razorback relievers wiggled out of some late-inning jams as Arkansas defeated Valparaiso 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Baum Stadium.[iv] 

·         No. 4 North Carolina wrapped up its second-straight series victory Saturday with a 14-0 win over visiting Wright State at Boshamer Stadium. Sophomore third baseman Colin Moran turned in a career day at the plate by going 5-for-6 with six RBI and became the first Tar Heel since 2008 to hit for a cycle.[v] 

·         Rice senior right-hander Matthew Reckling had a sensational day on the mound at Reckling Park, scattering two hits and three walks over a career-long 8.1 innings with a career-best 11 strikeouts as the No. 4 ranked Owls slipped past Dallas Baptist 2-0 Saturday afternoon.[vi] 

·         Pitching and timely hitting were the keys to victory Saturday afternoon as eighth-ranked Florida State (5-1) evened the weekend series with a 3-1 victory over FIU (1-4) in front of a crowd of 5,117 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.[vii]
