The Keepers - #26 - 2B-OF Josh Satin

26.    Josh Satin

Satin was drafting in the 6th round of the 2008 draft by the New York Mets.

Satin was drafted at 23 years old, so he’s moving as fast as he can. After signing in 2008, he played for Kingsport (.583/.615/1.000/1.615… okay, it was only 12 at bats) and Brooklyn (.280/.350/.462/.812).

2009 brought Savannah (.284/.385/.418/.803 in 440 at bats, 7-HR, 60-RBI) and a taste of St. Lucie (.364/.464/.591/1.055).

His 2-year professional totals are: .292/.384/.446/.830

Forecast:  It’s obvious that Satin was a good draft pick and the kid can definitely get on base. We should see a little more power this year, but his biggest problem is the fact that Reese Havens is currently being converted to a second baseman in the Winter Leagues. Havens looks timed perfectly for the end of the Luis Castillo contract, which leaves Satin where?

I wrote on Feb 10: - Josh Satin – I didn’t spend much time with Josh last year in Savannah (hell, I didn’t spend much time with anyone there…). There’s no rush for Satin, who will settle into various minor league levels for a couple more years. He was tagged early on as a poor defensive infielder which just isn’t true.

5-27-11: - 2B/1B Josh Satin was asked to play AA this spring so he could get more time in the field. Seems the club had been enjoying his time as a DH in the system, but a boy does have to field in the majors, right? Josh said fine, and went back to where he hit .308 last season, has hit .305 so far this season, and has only committed seven errors playing both first and second. Reese Havens should be done with his St. Lucie rehab sometime this week and Satin needs to pack his backs for Buffalo. He deserves it.

6-3-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/6/3/2203724/new-york-mets-daily-farm-system-report-6-3-11    - Josh Satin - Really like his swing. It's compact and generates line drives. He's a very patient hitter, not afraid to work the count, and comfortable batting with two strikes. Defensively, he's kind of without a position. Doesn't have the arm for third- in Moore's start someone beat his throw on what should have been a routine play- and doesn't have the range for second. The bat will play, though. Don't know if he will ever be a regular, and he's getting up there in prospect years, but I could see an upside of Jeff Keppinger with more walks.

6-25-11: -  http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110625&content_id=20971018&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb  -   Selected in the sixth round of the 2008 Draft, Satin began his memorable night with a two-out solo homer in the first inning. "I was down 1-2 in the count and Jordany [Valdespin] had just been thrown out at second," he said. "Their pitcher threw me a breaking ball that I fouled off and then a couple fastballs that I fouled off, so I felt like I had seen his stuff. I got a 1-2 or 2-2 breaking ball and I was able to hit it out." The 26-year-old third baseman beat out an infield single in the third and doubled to center field in the fifth, setting up his shot at history

6-29-11: - team press release: - Josh Satin has been selected to represent the Binghamton Mets at the 2011 Eastern League All-Star Game at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire on July 13. Infielder Josh Satin makes his third straight trip to an All-Star Game. The California native was selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game when he played with the Savannah Sand Gnats (Low-A) in 2009. He earned the Most Valuable Player award in the Florida State League All-Star Game last year while a member of the St. Lucie Mets (High-A). Satin went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in the contest. Through 76 games this season, Satin is seventh in the league with a .314 batting average, tied for third with 22 doubles, and tied for fourth with 48 RBI. The infielder became the first Binghamton Met in the franchise’s 20-year history to hit for the cycle when he performed the feat against the Bowie Baysox on June 24 this year.

7-11-11: - Top 10 Minor League Performances in 2011 - 4. Josh Satin – IF – AA/Binghamton: - .327/.425/.547/.972, 10-HR, 55-RBI, 300-AB – Satin is a pure hitter who, I hope for his sake, is being marketed as trade bait. This year’s version of Shawn Bowman. Nowhere to go and no one’s desire to move him. I expect him to remain here, especially after the Queens demotions that will come down with the return of Reyes and Wright.

7-12-11: -  http://mets360.com/?p=7278&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mets360%2Ffeed+%28Mets360+Feed%29      In his last 10 games, 2B Josh Satin is batting .406/.537/.781 over 40 PA. For the season, Satin has a .967 OPS in 85 games for Double-A Binghamton. Satin earned a callup to Binghamton last year and in 332 PA for the B-Mets he had a .308/.395/.472 line. He has bettered all three of his slash line totals this year and seems likely to get promoted to Triple-A before the season is over. A sixth-round draft pick of the Mets in 2008, Satin has hit wherever he’s been. A two-time Cape Cod League All-Star, Satin played four years at Cal and in his senior season he led the Bears with a .379 AVG and finished second on the club with 18 HR. He was a first-team All Pac-10 selection and third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball

7-14-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/7/11/2270752/mets-minors-road-report-binghamton-7-9-brooklyn-7-10  - He looked better at 3B as well, making a pair of nice plays, and handling all the routine stuff. This is the first year he has played this much at third base, so he could just be starting to get comfortable now. The arm is still mediocre for the position, but not egregiously so. He played 2B in the nightcap and stayed mostly anonymous, one bad throw trying to turn a double play, but he had to handle a weird backhanded flip from Valdespin deep behind second base. Probably should have put it in his pocket, but it didn’t really effect anything. Okay, so he’s six months older than Daniel Murphy, and he’s a future utility guy in an org that is stuffed to the brim with future utility guys. But I lobby for Josh Satin. I will lobby Sandy, and I will lobby Paul. He’s our new Jeff Keppinger, right down to the part where he’s going to be 28 before he gets a shot somewhere, and it probably won’t be with the Mets.

7-24-11: -   http://buffalo.bisons.milb.com/news/article.jsp ?ymd=20110724&content_id=22244656&vkey=news_t422&fext=.jsp&sid=t422  -   Josh Satin's first Triple-A home run pushed the Bisons ahead in the eighth, but Lars Anderson responded with his own two-run homer, taking a 7-6 Pawtucket win Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.  Satin had a chance for a walk-off, but center-fielder Che-Hsuan Lin made a running catch to end the game and strand two runners.  "I hit it well, barely off the end of the bat," Satin said. "It's just a learning process for me. I wish I could've come through for the team, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.  Satin hit 11 home runs in Double-A Binghamton, where he started the season.

7-26-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/7/26/2287253/mets-mid-term-farm-system-review-2011-binghamton#storyjump  - IF Josh Satin - STOCK UP - Quickly becoming one of the more polarizing players in the system, Satin eschewed questions about his advanced age (26) and proved that his bat is for real in his time with Binghamton. He posted a .325/.432/.528 line with 11 homers and an Eastern League-leading 35 doubles before a recent call-up to Triple-A. The issue is and always has been his lack of a position. He's not a major league second baseman and he's still leearning first and third. I've always considered him a righty Dan Murphy and that seems even more true today. He takes his walks, has a knack for line drives which means tons of doubles and decent home run pop and he has no position.Who knows where he fits but the bottom line is the guy

8-4-11: - http://buffalo.bisons.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110803&content_id=22702166&vkey=pr_t422&fext=.jsp&sid=t422  - Josh Satin has been in Triple-A for just 10 days but that was plenty of time to earn some honors. The Triple-A rookie hit in every game last week to collect the title of National Fuel For Thought Bisons Player of the Week for July 25-31.  Satin joined the Bisons on July 22 and hasn't stopped hitting since. He hit in every game last week, starting with his first multi-hit performance on July 25 against the Pawtucket Red Sox. He then wore out Yankees' pitching with seven hits in 15 at-bats against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to go along with two RBI and four runs scored

8-6-11: - http://risingapple.com/2011/08/05/a-closer-look-joshua-satin - As great as his hitting has been, the only red flag appears to be his extremely elevated .411 and .457 BABIP in Double-A and Triple-A, respectively, this season. However, considering he’s never had a BABIP below .321, it might not be as unsustainable as it would normally be. Come September, it would be shocking to not see Satin in the Majors. The infielder doesn’t appear to need more offensive seasoning in the Minors, and his defense will never be a strong suit. With all the success Dan Murphy has enjoyed this season for the Mets, Joshua Satin might become another good hitting/position-less player for the Mets in 2012 and beyond.

8-14-11: - http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/32042/projected-prospect-call-ups  - JOSH SATIN, infielder (.324, 12 HR, 71 RBI, .415 OBP, 417 at-bats with Buffalo and Binghamton): After hitting .325 in Double-A, Satin earned a July 22 promotion to the Bisons and continued his offensive success. A sixth-round pick in 2008 from Cal-Berkeley, Satin recently enjoyed a 15-game hitting streak. Perhaps a notch below Daniel Murphy in terms of defensive skill, Satin similarly has been exposed to first, second and third base.

8-19-11 – http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/8/19/2371629/prospect-of-the-day-josh-satin-inf-new-york-mets  - Satin's offensive numbers are quite good, obviously. He's hit at every level, has doubles power with occasional home run pop, and controls the strike zone well. There are a lot of moving parts in his swing which turns some scouts off, but minor league pitchers have been unable to exploit this or find consistent holes in his approach. He's considered highly intelligent and works hard at his game. Satin has nothing left to prove in the minors. The Mets seem willing to give him a shot in the majors, at least if Farm Director Paul DePodesta's recent comments are any indication. I would love to see what Satin could do with 500 major league at-bats. I'm not sure how he will get them, but he deserves a look as a bench player at least.

Josh Satin 2B Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A): 123 combined games with Buffalo and Binghampton, 12 HRs, 73 RBIs, .326 BA, 42 2Bs  Satin, a 2008 sixth-round draft pick of the Mets out of Cal, has shredded Eastern and then International League pitching this season with his nice mix of power and contact. Second base is the most unstable position on the field for the Mets personnel-wise so he has a nice chance of entering the carousel. The position has been a revolving door of players the last two seasons and Satin looks like he could fit in well at that position. The Mets would be foolish not to give this kid a shot in the majors in September.

9-1-11: - Stock Up: - IF Josh Satin – Satin was promoted to the Mets for the month of September. I don’t expect Josh to get many reps because TC is already on the record about playing Nick Evans at 1B and Ruben Tejada at second. That’s okay. He deserves the cup of coffee.

Josh Satin - Satin continues to hit at every level he plays and has a .307 BA for his career, his lifetime OBP is .397. This season, split between AA and AAA, his slash line is .322/.411/.493. He is a September call-up for the Mets, and has been added to the 40 man roster, so we should get to see his debut any day now at Citi. Next year he should be in the ST mix as a back-up 1B-2B-3B and PH, but with Evans blocking his path, he will probably spend 2012 as insurance for the big club, as he works on his defense at AAA, while playing 1B, 2B, and 3B.

9-15-11: - http://centralny.ynn.com/content/sports/557217/satin-named-mets-top-minor-leaguer  - Life just keeps getting better for Joshua Satin, who picked up his first major league hit in his first at-bat with the Mets Labor Day weekend and who has also picked up a pretty major minor-league honor. Satin has been named the New York Mets minor-leaguer of the year after hitting .323 with 12 homers and 76 RBI's while splitting time with Binghamton and AAA Buffalo this season. Satin was named an Eastern League all-star this summer, the third straight year he has earned a minor league all-star honor. The 26-year-old in his fourth season with the organization became the first B-Met ever to hit for the cycle and strung together a 15-game hit streak with the Bisons

11-25-11: - http://risingapple.com/2011/11/25/2011-season-in-review-josh-satin  - Defensively, Satin is kind of like Daniel Murphy-he can play a bunch of positions, but not that well.  In the minors, he spent the most time at second base (250 games) while also seeing action at first (80 games) and third (68 games).  In the Majors, Satin played eight games at first base and one at third.  To quote Toby Hyde of MetsMinorLeagueBlog, “He started playing third, although he doesn’t have the arm for the position. He doesn’t really have the power for first, where he played in the big leagues.” Hyde goes on to say that he sees Satin “as the 25th guy,” especially if he can learn to play left field.  Given that he doesn’t hit for power or play any position particularly well, the bench seems like the most logical fit.  He could serve as a right-handed pinch hitter and stay in the game to play defense if necessary.  While he might not make a huge impact on the team, Satin provides an internal candidate to fill a utility role and add some much needed depth to the club.

11-23-11: -   http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.js p?ymd=20111110&content_id=25949502&fext=.j sp&vkey=news_milb&partnerId=rss_nym    -   Utility -- Josh Satin, Buffalo (38 games), Binghamton (94 games), New York (15 games): With his silky smooth swing, Satin led all Bisons with at least 100 at-bats in batting (.317) -- he hit .323, counting his time with the B-Mets -- and led the organization with 35 doubles. He also set career highs in extra-base hits (57) and RBIs (76). Defensively, the Eastern League All-Star played at least 20 games at first base, second base and third base. "No matter where he goes, that's all he does -- hit," DePodesta said of the 26-year-old former Cal product. "We think he's a guy who can play multiple positions and we think he's a Major League hitter." His Double-A manager said Satin displays average ability at third and is too balky for second. He worked to improve his outfield technique in the Venezuelan Winter League. "Defensively, that's where Josh lacks," Backman said. "I love the kid to death, but if we can make him adequate at any position, he is a big league hitter. If he dedicates the same time he does to his hitting, he'll get there. [Moving to the outfield] puts him in a better position to go to the big leagues and stay in the big leagues."
