Mets: Charlie Samuels, Gilbert Gomez, Jon Rauch, Dillon Gee

Former Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing memorabilia worth more than $2.3 million from his old team. As part of a plea deal, he’s now banned from Mets games for life. Samuels, 54, will also have to return his massive collection of autographed bats, balls, jerseys and helmets. He must pay the Mets $25,000 in restitution. And he'll have to pay the city and state another $34,000 in back taxes http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ex-mets-clubhouse-manager-charlie-samuels-pleads-guilty-stealing-2-3m-memorabilia-article-1.1026265#ixzz1n2YzOyB0

Out of nowhere, this guy hit .307/.388/.547 in 85 High-A plate appearances at age 19. That’s out of line with his earlier performances, but one can’t help but be intrigued. Gomez offers some speed and should be a plus glove in the outfield corners, and his approach is advanced for his age. Like Urbina, he’s a young sleeper to watch. Grade: B-

Given the down year, it’s a bit surprising that it took $3.5 million for the Mets to sign Jon Rauch in December. His role in the bullpen should be similar to that of Manny Acosta or Bobby Parnell, both of whom could easily outperform Rauch this season. On the upside, the Mets only committed one year to a 6’ 10" reliever with a neck tattoo who has consistently avoided walking opposing hitters. And although the walls are moving in at Citi Field, Rauch probably won’t give up home runs at the clip he did last year. Like several of his new teammates, Rauch could be a trade chip in July if he’s performing like his non-2011 self. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/2/21/2813430/2012-mets-player-profile-jon-rauch

Most people already assumes Dillon Gee will be in the Mets' starting rotation this season, a defensible position given the dearth of other options. Everyone else is either underdeveloped (Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jeurys Familia) or not on the Mets (lots of guys). Chris McShane suggested in his profile a few weeks ago that, under more propitious circumstances, Gee would be ticketed for the Triple-A rotation: http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/2/21/2813489/new-york-mets-spring-training-2012-dillon-gee
