D1 Game Notes –
• Right now, after this weekend’s games, I only see seven “must draft” picks in the system. In no particular order:
RHPs Mark Appel, Kevin Gausman, Lucas Giolito, Kyle Zimmer and Michael Wacha
C Mike Zunino
OF Byron Buxton
From there, I see three more names that would fit in perfect to create the top 10 picks. Again, in no particular order, OF David Dahl, RHP Walker Weickel, and H.S Catcher Stryler Trahan.
The next two, which would be the 11th and 12th (Mets) pick are interchangeable. The Met will wind out with whomever isn’t picked ahead of them, but both these guys rate tremendously more than what the others that are still available… they are either LHP Max Fried and SS Deven Merrero.
But, that’s just me… this week.
• Western Nevada RHP Dylan Baker continues to gain support from the scouting community on the possibility of him sneaking into the first round of this year's draft. He is now 7-0 on the season with a 0.25 ERA, giving up only 1 earned run in 35.1 innings of work. He has started 8 games, completing 2 of those, giving up only 14 hits while striking out 48 and walking 20. His most recent effort was a complete game, 7 inning win over Southern Idaho in which he struck out 9 and gave up only 3 hits and 1 walk. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Baker has been consistently 91-95 and up to 96 with his fastball, maintaining that velocity deep into games. He has also thrown a sharp 78-81 curveball and a 81-84 slider. -
