A Good First Start...

By David Rubin

Okay- just watched Johan get through the first 2 innings vs. the Cardinals. His fastball topped out around 88-90 mph, which is fine for this time of the year. The fact that he's pitching at all is a blessing for Mets' fans, all too familiar with the previous plights of such pitchers as Mark Prior and Chien-Ming Wang who tried to come back from similar injuries. Santana's motion was free and easy, and he didn't look to be struggling at all. It's critical to see how well he feels tomorrow, to ensure that he'll have the resiliency necessary to heal the day after taking his turn in the rotation every fifth day. I'm not going to get my hopes up at all, but as I've said all along, if anyone could come back from this injury, it would be the bulldog that is Johan!!
