John Sickels Mock Draft

1)  Kevin Gausman, RHP, LSU.
2)  Lucas Giolito, RHP, California HS.
3) Mike Zunino, C, University of Florida
4)  Byron Buxton, OF, Georgia HS.
5)  Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford.
6) . Max Fried, LHP, California HS.
7)  David Dahl, OF, Alabama HS
8)  Carlos Correa, SS, Puerto Rico HS.
9)
 Walker Weickel, RHP, Florida HS,
10) Deven Marrero, SS, Arizona State.
11)
. Kyle Zimmer, RHP, San Francisco.

12) Mets (John): The Mets went with Brandon Nimmo last year, looking to add an impact bat to the system, and I can see them going the same route this year. Victor Roache and his enormous power would be an option, but the wrist injury clouds his spring. Looking at the high school ranks, I'll take an up-the-middle theme and go with Gavin Cecchini, a high school infielder with a strong bat, great makeup, and a chance to stick at short. Gavin Cecchini, SS, Louisiana HS.

  1. If Roache falls to the Mets given his recent injury, I hope they take a chance on him...I doubt he'll fall all the way to their additional early picks.

  2. I think he will fall that low.

They have in the past. Teams want to take no chances on someone that expensive. Look at Anthony Renaudo and Matt Purke.

  3. Mack - you think Roache will fall to 35?

If the Mets could snag another top talent (Marrero if he falls? A pitcher like McCullers) as well as Roache, it would be 2 straight drafts that impress me.

  4. I agree Mack, Roache will likely last until the supplemental rounds, but the problem with that is that he might consider going back to school at that point, especially if he does qualify for a medical redshirt as he's applying for.

The upside is there, but you're taking a chance with drafting him that late, as with the new CBA, it's harder to offering a Josh Bell type deal that the Pirates did last year without compromising your other Top 10 selections.

Personally, unless he said he wants to play ML ball sooner than later, I'd pass on him due to the risks I mentioned and take Trahan with the first pick if none of the top pitchers fall to us and take BPA the rest of the way.
