Mack On: ST Game One

The first thing that impressed me was the speed of Andres Torres on the steal in the first inning. Very few people try to steal in the first inning of the first spring training game, no less wind up safe on second base. His immediate aggressiveness made me forget about the loss of Jose Reyes… for about four seconds.

Dillon Gee did seem to lose his concentration after giving up a home run to Rick Ankiel.

Well, let’s face it. The only thing any of us wanted to see today was Matt Harvey. It was okay. He once again showed the lack of command on his fastball, so his game never set up. He also didn’t have one small count. He did hit 95, had a nasty 92-slider and his first curve was superb, but, the best you could say about this outing was his 0.00 ERA.

Frank Francisco didn’t show much, but not many people do this time of the year. You can’t look for velocity the first few weeks in spring training. Most pitchers are just getting going. He did have a nasty 78-curve early in his outing.

OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis is obviously fully healed this spring. A great defensive play in center, a run out preventing a double play and a stolen base show he’s ready to play.

What’s with all the stolen bases? Is TC sending a sign early that the Mets will be attempting to manufacture runs any way they can?

Frankly, Miquel Batista just looked… old.

No more “claw”.
