LAST GAME: The B-Mets scratched out just two hits and were shutout for the second time this season in 2-0 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats last night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium last night. Fisher Cats starter Deck McGuire allowed just one hit and struck out three over 6.2 scoreless innings. B-Mets starter Zack Wheeler struck out eight over six innings in the hard-luck loss. The righty gave up one run on three hits and walked two. Kevin Howard doubled home a run in the fourth for the Fisher Cats and Ryan Goins hit an RBI single in the eighth. The B-Mets walked six times at the plate, but stranded eight men on base, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (1-0, 1.80) makes his third start of the season. The southpaw from Penn-sylvania allowed two runs on four hits over four innings in a no-decision against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 14. Gorski struck out five and walked two in a game the B-Mets would lose 5-3. He spent all of last year with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) and was named the Florida State League pitcher of the year. He won his first ten decisions and finished the season at 11-3 with a 2.08 ERA. He held opponents to a .212 batting average, the second-lowest for any pitcher in the league. Gorski won the Sterling Organizational Award as the top pitcher in the New York Mets’ farm system.
RHP Billy Buckner (0-1, 6.30) takes the mound for the third time this season. The righty allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in no-decision against the B-Mets in his last start on April 14. The Georgia native was originally selected by the Kan-sas City Royals in the second round of the 2004 draft. He pitched for five seasons in the Royals system and made his Major League debut with the club in 2007. He also pitched three seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, making 26 appearances with the Big League club. He spent part of 2010 with the Tigers’ system and all of 2011 with the Colorado Rock-ies organization. In 36 Major League appearances (21 starts) he has gone 6-11 with a 6.25 ERA.
OFFENSIVELY STARVED: The B-Mets were held to a season-low total of two hits last night. In three starts this season, Zack Wheeler has received an average of 1.3 runs of support.
STREAK SNAPPED: Matt den Dekker’s hitting streak came to an end at nine games last night after his 0-for-4 evening at the plate against the Fisher Cats. The outfielder hit .368 (14-38) during the stretch, the longest hitting streak of any B-Met in 2012.
