B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

LAST GAME: Reese Havens went 3-for-4 in his return to the B-Mets and Zack Wheeler allowed one run over 5.2 innings to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Erie SeaWolves by a 7-1 score yesterday at Jerry Uht Park. Activated from the disabled list prior to the game, Havens crushed a two-run home run in the first inning on his first swing of the season. Matt den Dekker supplied an RBI triple and scored a run of his own to double the lead in the second. It was all the offense Wheeler needed to collect his first Double-A win. The righty struck out six and allowed two hits. Jeff Kaplan and Armando Rodriguez combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to lead Binghamton in the rubber match victory.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (2-0, 2.75) makes his fifth start of the season and second against the Akron Aeros. The lefty took a no-decision in his last start, allowing four runs on five hits over 3.2 innings against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on April 25. Gorski struck out four and walked four in the game. The southpaw earned the win in his Double-A debut when he allowed just one hit over six shutout innings to defeat the Aeros on April 7. He spent all of last year with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) and was named the Florida State League pitcher of the year. Gorski won the Sterling Organizational Award as the top pitcher in the New York Mets’ farm system.

RHP Steven Wright (2-1, 1.46) makes his fifth start of the season and second against the B-Mets. Wright has not allowed more than one earned run in each of his first four starts. He tossed a season-high 7.1 innings against the Bowie Baysox in a no-decision in his last start on April 25. Wright allowed one run on three hits over 5.2 innings in a loss to Binghamton on April 7. Wright, a native of Torrance, CA is in his fifth season with the Aeros. He pitched at four levels in the Indians system last year, racking up 25 appearances and making 20 starts. In seven starts with Akron in 2011, he went 2-4 with a 5.98 ERA.

EXTRA, EXTRA!: The B-Mets collected five extra-base hits yesterday against the Erie SeaWolves, including two doubles, two triples and a home run. It was the second time this season Binghamton collected a pair of triples. They lead the league with 12 three-baggers.

WALK THIS WAY: The B-Mets walked 10 times yesterday. It was the most walks for Binghamton in one game since they walked 12 times against the Akron Aeros on June 28, 2009. Binghamton walked 23 times during the three-game series.

MULTI-HIT GAME: B-Mets outfielder Matt den Dekker collected his team-leading tenth multiple-hit game of the season yesterday with a double and triple. He leads the Eastern League with 47 total bases.

PITCHING BATTLE: The Akron Aeros enter the series owning the best staff ERA in the league at 2.27. The B-Mets rank third with a 3.22 staff ERA. Binghamton has racked up the most strikeouts as a staff with 178, while Akron is a close second with 177.

A LITTLE WINDED: The Akron Aeros come into the series after playing 20 innings against the Altoona Curve yesterday. The Aeros took the first game of the doubleheader 4-3 in 13 innings and won the nightcap by a 3-2 score. Both were walk-off wins.

AGAINST THE AEROS: The Aeros took two of three games against the B-Mets back at NYSEG Stadium to open the season. Binghamton collected just 13 hits during the series and hit .157 as a team. Their pitching staff compiled a 2.00 ERA. LHP Darin Gorski was the only starter to record a win against Akron.

AT CANAL PARK: The B-Mets went 4-3 against the Aeros at Canal Park last season after winning all six meetings in Ohio in 2010.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game set at Canal Park tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey will take on LHP T.J. House.
