Thinking of better times

I recently read a book by Jeff Pearlman called "The Bad Guys Won".  It was a pretty interesting inside look at the 86' mets, the good and the bad.


As good as that team was, I was amazed to learn several things:


1. The Mets drafted Roger Clemens in the early 80's and chose not to give in to his 50k bonus demand.


2. The Mets made a serious run at signing Dave Winfield in 1982, he decided he had a better chance to win with the Yankees--The Mets signed George Foster instead the next year.


3.  A Lee Mazilli for Lee Smith trade fell through at the last minute.
