LAST GAME: The Harrisburg Senators scored five runs in the second inning and held off a late comeback to defeat the Binghamton Mets 7-4 last night at NYSEG Stadium. The Senators pounded out six hits and took advantage of three wild pitches to score five runs in the decisive inning. B-Mets starter Gonzalez Germen shook off the rocky inning and retired 14 of the last 15 Senators he faced. Binghamton cut the deficit to two in the sixth, but Harrisburg added two more in the seventh against Edgar Ramirez. The B-Mets loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth innings, but only scored one run. Erik Davis struck out Jefry Marte with the bases loaded to end the game. Jeff Mandel allowed three runs over six innings to earn his third win.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (2-0, 2.45) makes his sixth start of the season for Binghamton. The southpaw took a no-decision against the Akron Aeros in his previous start. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out three over six innings. He spent all of last year with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) and was named the Florida State League pitcher of the year. Gorski won the Sterling Organizational Award as the top pitcher in the New York Mets’ farm system.
LHP Danny Rosenbaum (3-0, 0.76) makes his sixth start of the season. The southpaw from Ohio has compiled the lowest ERA among qualifiers in the Eastern League. He did not allow a run in his last two starts and has not surrendered an earned run in over 23 innings on the mound. He allowed six hits and walked none over seven shutout innings in a no-decision against the New Britain Rock Cats in his last start. New Britain eventually won the game 1-0 in twelve innings. Selected in the 22nd round of the 2009 draft, Rosenbaum has issued just two walks and struck out 23 over 35.2 innings.
BASES LOADED BAIL-OUT: The B-Mets had the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings and scored just one run last night. Binghamton is hitting .212 (7-for-33) as a team with the bases loaded with just one double.
ELUSIVE CONSECUTIVE WINS: Binghamton failed to collect back-to-back wins for the fifth-straight time. The B-Mets have not won consecutive games since they took four in a row against the Portland Sea Dogs spanning from April 19-22.
RACKING UP THE K’S: Last night, the B-Mets pitching staff combined to collect 13 strikeouts, a new season-high. Gonzalez Germen led the charge by fanning nine over six innings, while Kevin Mulvey struck out four over two frames. The B-Mets have struck out 214 on the year, third-most in the league.
A BIT WILD: The B-Mets uncorked four wild pitches last night, allowing a total of four runs to score. It tied a season-high set against the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium on April 22.
GERMEN DEALING: After a bumpy second inning, B-Mets starter Gonzalez Germen retired 14 of the last 15 he faced. He matched a season-high for starting pitcher strikeouts my fanning nine Senators.
WHO NEEDS HITS?: B-Mets outfielder Juan Lagares collected two RBI while going 0-for-4 last night. Lagares drove home one with a fielder’s choice in the sixth and plated another with a groundout to second in the eighth.
PACKING THEM IN: Last night’s attendance of 3,897 was the largest of 2012. It was the largest NYSEG Stadium crowd since the B-Mets welcomed in 6,033 for Jose Reyes’ rehab appearance on 8/26/11.
THIEVERY: Harrisburg infielder Jeff Kobernus swiped three bases last night, kicking his league-leading toal to 22 on the season. There is a three-way tie for second with 8. It was the second time this season he has stolen three or more in one game.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets wrap up their series against the Senators tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the ball from Binghamton against RHP Robert Gilliam.
