LAST GAME: The B-Mets could not preserve a three-run lead and fell to the Akron Aeros by a 6-5 score in 10 innings last night at Canal Park. Chun Chen came off the bench to supply three hits for the Aeros, including the walk-off blow in the bottom of the tenth. The B-Mets put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. Akron offered a quick rebuttal with two runs in the bottom of the frame off reliever Kevin Mulvey. Akron could not score with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth, but broke through with a run in the ninth off Elvin Ramirez. With runners on the corners in the tenth, Chen singled to right off Jeff Kaplan to give Akron their seventh straight victory. B-Mets starter Greg Peavey allowed two runs over six innings and stood to pick up the win until the B-Mets bullpen blew the lead.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (1-2, 2.25) makes his fifth start of the season and first against the Akron Aeros in 2012. The southpaw collected his second straight win by holding the Erie SeaWolves to one run on four hits over six innings on April 27. The Texas native started last season with the B-Mets. He went 1-3 with a 3.81 ERA in nine starts before being promoted to Buffalo (AAA) in late May. In 18 starts in the International League, Cohoon went 4-11 and compiled a 6.11 ERA. A 12th-round pick in the June 2008 draft by the Mets, the southpaw is in his fifth season of pro baseball. It’s his third year with the B-Mets.
LHP Giovanni Soto (2-0, 4.05) makes his fifth start of the season and first against the B-Mets in 2012. The 20-year-old native of Puerto Rico took a no-decision in his last start, allowing one run on five hits over 5.2 innings against the Altoona Curve on April 27. Originally drafted by the Tigers in 2009, Soto was traded to the Indians in exchange for SS Jhonny Peralta in July 2010. This is his first season at the Double-A level. He went 4-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 games (11 starts) with the Kinston Indians (High-A) last year.
LOSING THE NAILBITERS: Last night’s 6-5 defeat was Binghamton’s sixth loss in a game decided by one-run. They are now 1-6 in one-run games this season. Their only victory was a 2-1 win over the Aeros at NYSEG Stadium on April 7. Akron leads the league with nine one-run wins this year.
BACK-TO-BACK DROPS: The B-Mets have lost two games in a row for the third time this season. Their last consecutive losses came against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 13 & 14. The club has not lost three games in a row this year.
WALKING AWAY: Last night’s win for Akron was their third walk-off win of the homestand. The Aeros took both ends of a doubleheader against the Altoona Curve on April 29 in walk-off fashion. They have now won six straight games by one-run.
ANOTHER TIGHT ONE: The last four games between the B-Mets and Aeros have been decided by one run. The B-Mets are 1-4 versus Akron this year.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Oswaldo Navarro became the fifth different B-Met to play first base this season last night. In 1,009 career minor league games, Navarro has now played just three games at first base.
MARTE MASHING: B-Mets third baseman Jefry Marte has hit safely in 18 of his 20 games as a B-Met and reached safely in all but one game. His single in the first inning last night extended his hitting streak to eight games. He put together a ten-game hitting streak in April, the longest for any B-Met in 2012.
GETTING ON THE STAT SHEET: Kai Gronauer’s single in the seventh inning brought home Eric Campbell, giving Binghamton a one-run lead. It was Gronauer’s first RBI of the season.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets wrap up their series against the Aeros and complete their week-long roadtrip tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. RHP Collin McHugh takes the mound for Binghamton.
