DeLand Suns pitcher Jacob deGrom was in familiar territory Friday night -- on
the mound at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
But the lanky right-hander from Stetson who is projected to be selected within the first 10 rounds in next week's Major League Baseball first-year player draft experienced something completely different: The satisfaction a hurler gets from breaking a hitter's wooden bat.
"I feel more confidence going inside on batters, that's for sure," deGrom said. "With aluminum, they get some hits that they wouldn't get with wood."
DeGrom actually broke three bats, more than enough for a small campfire in his DeLeon Springs back yard, while pitching in the Florida Collegiate Summer League season opener between the Suns and Orlando Mavericks. DeGrom struck out four, scattered three singles, didn't walk a batter and left after five innings with a 3-2 lead. Both of Orlando's runs were unearned.
The Mavericks added two runs in the eighth inning and won 4-3.
Not only was deGrom snapping wood, but his fastball was hitting between 92 and 94 mph on one scout's radar gun in the first two innings. His last outing before the draft certainly showed he's ready for the next level, especially pitching against hitters swinging wood bats.
DeGrom may not be in a Suns uniform very long.
"We'll have to play it by ear, but if this is his only start for us, it's a good way for him to go out at home," said Suns coach Rick Hall, who also coached deGrom in American Legion baseball. "We're hoping for the best for him next week (in the draft)."
Several scouts were in attendance, including representatives from the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.
