BaySox 8, B-Mets 6

BINGHAMTON,NY – The Binghamton Mets scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inningwithout the aid of a hit, but fell two runs short of a comeback, losing to theBowie Baysox 8-6 Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Pinch-hitter Francisco Pena,representing the tying run, struck out against reliever Pedro Viola to end theballgame.

TheB-Mets walked nine times and collected eleven hits, but stranded 11 men on baseand went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in their fifth straightloss at home. The three-hour, thirty-four minute contest was the longest B-Metgame of the season.

Forthe first time in the series, the B-Mets drew first blood. Jefry Marte gaveBinghamton their first lead of the year against Bowie with an RBI singleagainst Bobby Bundy in the first. Wilmer Flores followed with a sac fly andadded a run-scoring single in the third, giving Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

TheBaysox came storming back in the fourth against B-Mets starter Darin Gorski.Josh Barfield singled with one out to jumpstart a four-hit rally. Run-scoringsingles by Manny Machado and Buck Britton got Bowie within one and an RBIfielder’s choice by Zelous Wheeler tied the game at three. Catcher Juan Centenoallowed Britton to score the go-ahead run from third when he airmailed a throwto second on a fake steal by Wheeler.

Givena one-run lead, Bundy’s night came to an abrupt end in the bottom of the fourth.With two outs, Jefry Marte seared a line drive off the righty’s left leg for a single.Bundy was helped off the field and replaced by Eddie Gamboa.

Gorskirebounded from the rocky fourth and faced the minimum over his final twoinnings on the mound, allowing just one walk. He exited after allowing fourruns (three earned) on five hits over six innings.

Thelefty was taken off the hook when the B-Mets fought back to tie the game insixth against Gamboa. Pedro Zapata reached on a fielder’s choice and advancedto third when Gamboa’s pickoff attempt skipped down the right field line. JuanLagares drove in the tying run with a sac fly to center.

RyanFraser took over for Gorski in the seventh and posted a perfect inning beforerunning into trouble in the eighth. Antoan Richardson walked to start theframe, moved to third on a sac bunt and ground out, and scored on a passed ballby Centeno.

Trailingby one, Binghamton threatened in the eighth, but could not break throughagainst reliever Pat Egan in his second inning. With runners at second andthird, Reese Havens struck out looking to end the frame.

Inthe ninth, the Baysox tagged Robert Carson for three runs to extend their leadto four. They used two hits and took advantage of three walks, a season-highfor the lefty, to add to their advantage.

Theinsurance runs proved vital for Bowie. Clayton Schrader entered in the ninthand immediately got Binghamton back in the game, walking all three he faced.Viola entered and continued the trend, issuing a free pass to Dustin Martin toforce in a run. Viola settled down and induced Wilfredo Tover to bounce into arun-scoring double play before striking out Pena to end the ballgame.

Fraser(1-1) suffered his first loss as a B-Met while Egan (2-0) collected thevictory. Viola nailed down his fourth save.
