Further Information on Prospective Mets Draftees

Here are some quick blurbs on other players the Mets have been tied to in mocks.

Michael Wacha- College RHP- First Round: Good control righty from TAMU. Would be quick to the bigs, good junior season, good change up. Limited ceiling (most scouts say #3 is the best case scenario for Wacha)

Lance McCullers High School RHP- First Round: Gatorade High School Player of the Year. Throws 100 MPH on his fastball with a good curve. Stock plummeted this season after being in #1 consideration last winter. No reason for this—Lance did not allow a single earned run during the regular season. He won the Player of the Year award for a reason.

** I would love it if the Mets drafted Lance McCullers. If he is on the board and other options are gone (Hawkins, Almora, Fried), this should be the guy. Mets went off-grid for Nimmo last year which means they might again. He would not be the expected pick but has the stuff to be the best pitcher out of this draft.

Clint Coulter- High School Catcher- Supplemental: High school catcher from Washington. Former state champ in wrestling. Jaw-dropping power but questions about defensive ability. Would be a project but well worth a look with our supplemental #35 pick.

Lewis Brinson- High School Outfielder- Supplemental: Lewis Brinson is a guy I was thrilled to see fall in the mock drafts. Once considered a late first-rounder, he should be around by our 35th pick. He is one of the fastest players in the draft (6.4 60 time), has raw power, and a plus arm in center. 6’4” right-handed hitter out of Coral Springs, Florida.

Lucas Giolito- High School RHP- First Round: Enough has been written about Giolito. Fans know who this kid is. Probably the best pitching prospect in the draft but has signability and injury concerns. If the Mets draft him, cross your fingers he signs (and hope Sandy can find a way to stay under the spending cap).

Brian Johnson- College LHP/1B- Supplemental: Brian Johnson was a consensus top-15/first rounder before a spring season that saw him slip. As a two-way player, he would be worth a pick with the thought that he would improve with consistent focus on just pitching. Still profiles as a #3ish LH starter. I would take that with pick #35 any day of the week.

***Other players I think the Mets should look at (or are) because of their talent and what they would add to the system:

Tyler Naquin Round 1-s. Athletic college outfielder.
JaMarcus McGruder 3-4. Small defensive wizard at second base who finished the year top-10 in collegiate batting average.
Patrick Kivlehan 4-5. Rutgers shortstop who focused full-time on baseball this year and it paid off. Could wait to get this local college product who is older than you normally see for a college draftee, but would be worth the look.
Wyatt Mathisen 1? 2? I would take him early—one of the better catching prospects available.
Rock Rucker 2-3. Would draft him as a power lefty but his bat is pretty darn good too.
Raph Rhymes 5-6. Led division I in batting…for some reason is not projected to be drafted anywhere near the top of the draft or even the first few rounds.
Richie Martin 4-5. Small, athletic, speedster who should stick at shortstop at the next level. Good glove, great athlete.
Cole Irvin- 2. Rising southpaw from California. Pitched well late in season and has impressed scouts with his improvement. Good size and potential.
