Columnist Joel Sherman in
the Post projects the Mets will sign David Wright
to an extension this offseason. The Mets have a team option on Wright at $16
million for 2013 right now. Writes Sherman: In fact, I was surprised how
confident Mets officials sounded that they would find common ground this
offseason and retain Wright long term. Wright’s return to elite status this
year means the Mets have to expect to pay well north of the six-year, $100
million extension Washington gave to Ryan Zimmerman in
February, when the third baseman still had two years at $26 million remaining
on his previous deal. Wright is due $16 million next year, and the Mets do not
want all the tension that would come from Wright playing in his walk year,
since their intention is to retain him anyway.
AAA – Buffalo:
Sunday –
RHP Chris Schwinden will make his 13th start with the
Bisons this year. He allowed just one run in 4.2 innings of work in his last
start, a no-decision in Louisville on Tuesday. The righty has made three starts
and five appearances since returning to the Mets organization. Since July 6,
Schwinden has a 2.20ERA in 16.1 innings of work (16K).
Josh Satin ranks 2nd in the International League
with a .401 on-base percentage. The last Bison to rank in the top 5 in the
league on on-base percentage by the end of the season was OF Ben Francisco in 2007 (.382, T5th), the same year he
won the IL batting title (.318)...
AA-Binghamton:
LHP Mark Cohoon (5-7, 3.60)
makes his 17th start of the season and second against the Sea Dogs. Cohoon
earned the win in his last start against the New Britain Rock Cats on July 24.
The southpaw allowed three runs on five hits over 7.1 innings, matching a
season-high. Since returning from the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) on July 5, Cohoon
has gone 2-0 and compiled a 2.32 ERA. The B-Mets have gone 4-0 in his last four
starts. The Texas native defeated the Sea Dogs on April 21, earning his first
win of the season. Cohoon allowed just one run while scattering seven hits over
seven innings.
RHP Stolmy Pimentel (4-4, 4.83)
makes his 16th start of the season and second against the B-Mets. Pimentel
faces a team a team other than the Trenton Thunder or New Hampshire Fisher Cats
for the first time in six starts. The native of the Dominican Republic defeated
the Thunder in his last start on July 24. He struck out six while allowing two
runs over 6.1 innings. After losing four decisions in a row from May 24 to June
23, Pimentel has won his last three decisions. The righty faced the B-Mets on
May 9 and took a no-decision, tossing six shutout innings in a game the B-Mets
would win 6-5 in ten innings. Pimentel was signed out of the Dominican Republic
in 2006.
Sunday – Win, 6-2
The B-Mets jumped out early with four runs in the first
against SP Stolmy Pimental. Featured hits were
the 4th HR by 2B Sean Kazmar (.226)
and two run singles by RF Dustin Martin (.268)
and C Juan Centeno (.281).
Frank Francisco (6.75) continued his rehabbing with a scoreless inning and C.J. Nitkowski (0.00) mopped up.
A+ - St. Lucie: -
Sunday – Loss, 4-6
SP Logan Verrett had an
outstanding first A+ outing (6.1-IP, 2-ER, 4-K, 0-BB) and the team held the
lead into the 8th before giving up four runs by Hamilton Bennett (2.96) and Jeffrey
Walters (2.60).
Only two Lucy hits.Most of their runs were scored on 7-BB and
2-E.
A – Savannah: -

Sunday – Loss, 2-6
Only four Sand Gnats hits, including a double by 1B Cole Frenzel (.227, E). This is Frenzel’s second stint
with Savannah and he is hitting .297 in his last ten games. He had a miserable
start back in May (.100) but hit the leather off the ball for Brooklyn (.342)
in between Sand Gants stints.
Savannah leads the league in ERA and WHIP, but not tis night.
Starter Marcos Camarena struggled (5.1-IP, 10-H,
5-ER) and the team never rebounded. It was good to see Brandon Sage back with
the living (3.86).
A-Low – Brooklyn:
Sunday – Win, 10-5
Big night for the
prospects… CF Brandon Nimmo broke out (4-6, 3-R,
double, 3rd HR, 2-RBI, .240) and SS Phillip
Evans added 3-5, 2-R, 4th HR, 4-RBI, .232). This game is so
much easier if the guys you drafted early were the right picks.
RP Beck Wheeler had his best outing of the year (3.0-IP,
0-R, 6-K) and Logan Taylor (0.00) threw 1.2 more scoreless innings.
Rookie –
Kingsport:
Sunday – Loss, 2-6
SP Chris Flexen (6.0-IP, 8-H, 3-ER,3-K, 1-BB, 6.39)
continues to professionally struggle. RP Robert
Gsellman (2.0-IP, 3-ER, 5.25) isn’t fairing much better.
Only four K-Port hits.
