Portland 5, B-Mets 1

The Portland Sea Dogs took the lead just two batters into the game andnever looked back, defeating the Binghamton Mets 5-1 on Saturday night. The B-Metsstranded nine runners on base and watched their six-game home winning streakagainst the Sea Dogs come to an end.

Aftergetting held to two runs in Friday’s doubleheader, Portland’s offense jumpedout of the gate against B-Mets starter Greg Peavey in the opening frame, withthe first four batters reaching safely.

JackieBradley led off with a walk and Jeremy Hazelbaker gave Portland the early leadby stroking a two-run homer to right center. Marquez Smith followed with adouble and scored when Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled to left field.

Binghamtoncracked the scoreboard against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt in the third.Wilfredo Tovar started the frame by doubling down the left field line. Theshortstop took third on a single by Juan Lagares and scored when Eric Campbellgrounded out to third.

Peaveysettled down after allowing an unearned run in the second. The righty retired14 of the final 15 batters he faced, ending his night after six innings.Portland scratched out their final run against him in the fifth. Hazelbakerreached on a bunt single to start the innings, stole second and third andscored on Smith’s second sac fly of the night.

Kehrtnavigated his way through five innings before running into trouble in thesixth. The righty’s night ended after issuing a pair of two-out walks. MichaelOlmsted entered and induced Wilfredo Tovar to bounce into a fielder’s choice toend the inning.

Peavey(4-7) exited after six innings, having allowed five runs (four earned) on fivehits. He struck out four and gave way to Armando Rodriguez in the seventh.Rodriguez allowed two hits and struck out four over two shutout frames. AdamKolarek made his Double-A debut in the ninth, striking out two in a perfectinning.

Olmstedtook the game into the eighth inning, fanning five in two shutout innings ofrelief. Josh Fields got the final out in the eighth and tossed a perfect ninthto close out the game.

TheB-Mets (50-56) complete their series against the Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon at1:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the hill for Binghamton against RHP StolmyPimentel. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:50 PM onNewsradio 1290 WNBF.
