Ike will absolutely be the first baseman next year. The Mets aren't going to non-tender him in his first arbitration year and they aren't going to trade him after a .220 season, even if he hits 30 home runs. No reason to quit on him right now.
Daniel Murphy and Josh Thole in the same boat. Murphy has hit for two seasons now and no one in the minors is going to push him off second base. Like Ike, Murph's value is highest to the Mets and decreases on another team. Thole has very little value to anyone else, but is a perfectly servicable #8 hitter in a catching platoon.
Pelfrey will certainly be non-tendered - going to arbitration will cost between $4 and $5 million. I'll be surprised if anyone - including the Mets - offer him a major-league contract next season.
@ Jack. I disagree on Murphy. I think his value higher on a team that needs a 3B, since that is his natural position (and I use the term "natural" loosely there).
I think you might be able to get something decent for him if you unload him on a team that needs a 3B.
1.) Agree with Brian- Dillon Gee is the 5th starter going into 2013, period. He was one of the best #5 starters (and I dislike the whole 1-5 thing, but that's what's used so going with it) and injuries, especially one that, since repaired, will make him an even better pitcher, is no reason to lose his space. I think he has matured into being a real pitcher, learning how to get by when the stuff he DOES have isn't working so well (take a lesson, Mr. Niese). He stays at #5 until pushed out DURING the season.
2.) Regarding Murphy- forget about other second baseman. There are a handful- literally- of second-sackers who will give you a .300+ average and knock in 60+ runs- AND smack over 30 doubles. His power is slim and his fielding, while much-improved, is still not at major league par, but overall, there is no one ready (or, more importantly, ABLE) to replace him and at his salary, there's no way the team is looking to replace him just yet. He is a LOCK for 2013 at second (and forget trading him- he still doesn't bring back enough in trade to justify starting a Turner or Havens at the position).
3.) Pelfrey- he's not going to get a $5 mil deal coming off this injury- he's going to be on an incentive-laden deal, like C Young, etc. Teams need starters, so if the Mets don't take a chance, there will DEF be a team who will. I don't think Pelfrey wants to come back to NY, and with Warth-less still as pitching coach, I just don't think it's much of a fit. I'd rather we took a chance on him to see if he had anything, especially if he was truly healthy and could once again be an innings-horse on a 1-year deal. I just don't see it happening in New York; or, at least, with THIS New York team.
4.) Lucas Duda will be platooning with Jason Bay in left field. PERIOD. He's going to be given every chance next year to be the man there, and in limited at-bats this year, he still had 10 homers and over 40 RBIS, which amounts to TWO YEARS of Bay production at this rate. If u are keeping Bay out there, which you still have to do b/c Sandy isn't waiving him just yet, I think he has to be attached to Duda as his platoon partner.
This won't be liked but I am betting that Robert Parnell will see a change of scenery in 2013 and that the team will bring back Jon Rauch on another one year deal.
Parnell hasn't learned how to pitch, yet, under the "esteemed" watch of one Dan "Warthless" Warthen. At this point, with THAT ARM, he's best served as part of a deal, perhaps one in which we get a young catching prospect back (think Toronto, and NO, I'm NOT letting go of the thought of grabbing one of their 2 top catching prospects). It will take a LOT more than Parnell to get that deal done, but you have to think that, with Toronto's excellent player development staff, they'd salivate over an arm like Robert's.
Edgin is a lock for the bullpen in 2013, at least to begin the season. With Francisco, Rauch and Edgin, I'd add Carson as another lefty in the bullpen (Byrdak is done at least thru June, if he ever comes back) and Mejia, and that amounts to 5 in the bullpen. Sandy will have to trade for, or sign, another top set-up arm, hopefully catching lightning in a bottle. Perhaps he can look over DBacks GM Kevin Towers' shoulder to see whose on HIS list???
So,as far as the bullpen goes, that's my thought...
We HAVE a platoon partner, mack- DUDA- PERIOD!!! There's no way the team spends any more in Left, and Duda is it. Now, if you said a Cabrera for CF or a Swisher in right, I could see that...but with Bay in left, Duda is his platoon partner, IMO...
@Rob- yep...for now...let's hope that the mid-season addition of Wheeler and possibly one or two off-season pickups will shake things up a bit more, and a rotation laden with young talent perhaps brings us closer to being the 2010 Giants then the 2012 Marlins...
So that leaves a platoon catcher to fill out the bench, as well as a starting outfielder. I am going out on a limb, and postulate that we sign Melky Cabrera to play center, at 3 yrs/$13 mil per, with incentives. Surround him with Duda-Bay in left and Hairston-Baxter in right, with Campbell backing at the corners, plus 3b and 1b, Turner at middle inf, and there you go. That's it for me today- out with the family for the day. Feel good, and next Sunday, why not make it "You Be The GM @ The War Room" - suggesting trades and signings??!! Just a thought...
Also, since u asked about the bullpen, here are my thoughts, again, from an earlier comment:
This won't be liked but I am betting that Robert Parnell will see a change of scenery in 2013 and that the team will bring back Jon Rauch on another one year deal.

***I'd amend that comment with one more thought:
I would rather see the Mets change pitching coaches, in which case, I'd make the case for keeping Parnell, as you can teach pitching, you can't teach speed. If Warthen IS retained, and unfortunately, I am betting that he is, then again, Parnell is trade-bait. There are not going to be a lot of "top quality" arms out there to be had on the free agent market, and the "also-rans" like Matt Capps are NOT what, I think, any of us have in mind as an upgrade. I have some possible, interesting trades in mind to acquire some bullpen arms- perhaps we can run with those kind of thoughts next Sunday?
Until then, happy Sunday, everyone, and as always, LET'S GO METS!!!
thanks David for your thoguths which are always well thought out...
the 'War Room' cocept isn't working... most are putting one post up with their thoughts and bye-bye. I guess I'm trying to reverse the process and turn a blog post into a thread...
I still say Ike is the 1B next year, and I would not be surprised if Murphy is gone.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have absolutely zero idea who will be the starting outfield and how the catching situation will shake out. The bullpen is a mess too.
Man, the more I think about it the more depressing it is....

Rob - you might want to keep the comments on the orginal post so everyone can read them in order
ReplyDeleteMorning Jack...
ReplyDeleteOkay... I'm adding Ike. He definitely deserves another year after that Harper Valley fever.
Doesn't matter where the comments are posted
I'm going to go read the other posts... I'll be back

Okay...
ReplyDeletewe got a discussion going on Murph, so I'll hold up there...
Re: Thole - need more discussion
Re: depression setting in... that's the whole point of doing this :)
Is this series "What should be done" or "What will be done" - because if it's "should" then Jason Bay should not be the team's LF.
ReplyDeleteIf it's "will" it's hard to imagine a scenario where Dillon Gee doesn't open 2013 in the rotation.
A couple of quick points.
ReplyDelete1.) Agree with Brian- Dillon Gee is the 5th starter going into 2013, period. Bullpen, bullpen, bullpen...
ReplyDeleteThis won't be liked but I am betting that Robert Parnell will see a change of scenery in 2013 and that the team will bring back Jon Rauch on another one year deal.

Morning Brian:
ReplyDeleteI agree on Bay, but a contract is a contract and even Fareek Zakaria (sp?) wouldn't buy that out this morning.
What we need to do is select a platoon partner
We HAVE a platoon partner, mack- DUDA- PERIOD!!! There's no way the team spends any more in Left, and Duda is it. Now, if you said a Cabrera for CF or a Swisher in right, I could see that...but with Bay in left, Duda is his platoon partner, IMO...
ReplyDeleteAll right...
ReplyDeletefor now...
let's add:
LHLF - Lucas Duda
2B - BDaniel Murphy
SP5 - Dillon Gee
The 2013 Mets look an awful lot like the 2012 Mets....
ReplyDeleteLe sigh....
@Rob- yep...for now...let's hope that the mid-season addition of Wheeler and possibly one or two off-season pickups will shake things up a bit more, and a rotation laden with young talent perhaps brings us closer to being the 2010 Giants then the 2012 Marlins...
ReplyDeleteokay... let's more on to discussions on:
ReplyDeleteParnell
Mejia
Familia
Rauch
:::Re-stated from other post, plus bullpen:::
ReplyDeleteMack- u have my thoughts on the bullpen, but for the bench, the only players I have are:
OF: Hairston
OF: Baxter
INF: Turner
INF/OF: Campbell
So that leaves a platoon catcher to fill out the bench, as well as a starting outfielder. I am going out on a limb, and postulate that we sign Melky Cabrera to play center, at 3 yrs/$13 mil per, with incentives.
