Seven Mets became free
agents last night at midnight. Their names and 2012 salaries were: OF Scott Hairston,
$1.1mil, P Jon Rauch, $3.5mil, P Ramon Ramirez, $2.65mil, IF Ronny Cedeno, $1.15mil, P Kelly
Shoppach, $1.35mil, P Tim Byrdak $1mil, P Chris
Young - $1mil.
Okay, there’ a chance
one or two of these could come back after they find no one else wants them,
but, on the surface, there seems to be around $12mil off the books for 2013.
Cot lists the current
salaries in 2013 as $94,508,822. Take this $12ml off and you’re around $82mil.
There’s arbitration
gains and minimum wage players that will be elevated and need to be added to
this figure, but it sure seems to me there is at least $10mil left to still
keep the overall 2-13 payroll at “around $100mil”
Please tell me I’m
wrong here. Call me old and feeble. While you’re at it, tell me my spelling
sucks. But, there still seems to be enough money to build a 25-man with a
decent addition, either at the catcher level or in centerfield (did you notice
that Andres Torres was missing from this list?.
Let’s do the drill
again:
SP – Johan Santana
($25.5mil), Jon Niese ($3,050mil), RA Dickey ($5mil), Dillon Gee ($502K), Matt
Harvey ($490K)
RP – Frank Francisco
($6.5mil), Bobby Parnell (est. $800K)), Robert Carson ($490K), Josh Edgin
($490K), Jeurys Familia ($490K), Jeremy Hefner ($490K), Jenry Mejia ($490K)
IF – Daniel Murphy
(est. $850K) ), Ike Davis (est. $1.5mil), Rubin Tejada (est. $520K), Justin
Turner (est. $520K), David Wright ($15,350mil)
C – Josh Thole (est. $750K)
OF – Jason Bay
($18.125), Lucas Duda (est $520K), Mike Baxter (est. $520K), Jordany Valdespin
(490K), Kirk Nieuwenhuis ($490K)
This is 23 players,
meaning any more than two new players means someone has to be replaced. The
25-man salary would be $85,827,000.
So, if Sandy Alderson
is telling the truth when he says there is “around” $100mil to pay out in 2013,
the Mets still would have around $14mil to find a catcher and an outfielder.
So, what am I doing
wrong here?
You're wrong... Because Sandy Alderson said that Santana's and Bay's 2014 buyouts WILL be included into the 2013 payroll.
ReplyDeleteThey are really trying to make 2013 the last year of failure and trying to give themselves the absolute most money possible for 2014. I agree with him. Get the losing over with.
So, add in whatever the buy outs would be. I know Johan's is 5 million so that drops your figure to 8 million. Now, subtract Bay's. If Sandy was serious about getting some production in the outfield for 2013, he's going to have to trade and make sure he's swapping even monies to ensure a low payroll. He definately has his work cut out for him.
I also think your estimates on Davis, Murphy, and Thole are low. I haven't seen anywhere where Davis gets less then 3 million.
ReplyDeletethe estimates were from Adam Rubin
ReplyDeleteyeah, I knew I had this wrong... thanks for the heads up
