If I were Sandy- Remaining Things to Do.

So we've got the David Wright extension and now the R.A. Dickey trade that netted us a franchise catcher in Travis D'Arnaud, a potential #3 in Noah Syndergaard, and a wild card who could become a superstar in Wuilmer Becerra. So far the Sandman gets a B in my book for offseason moves. But how can he turn this offseason into an A caliber offseason?

(As we discussed yesterday in the Payroll thread, Sandy has a minimum of $15MM to use up to a maximum of $21MM depending on the methodology you you to calculate payroll.)
.

  1. Re-Sign Scott Hairston to a 2 yr/$8MM contract.
  • Look, OF help is not going to be cheap, especially with the New York Yankees looking for the same thing we are. Hairston has stated that he is extremely open to returning to the Mets and with Johnny Gomes setting the market for RH hitting outfielders at 2 yr/$10MM, this contract looks very reasonable AND signable. You can slot Hairston in as your starting RF while Duda and Cowgill platoon and split time in LF.
     2. Take a flyer on Matt Diaz. Min: Minor League Deal with invite to camp Max: 1 yr/$1MM
  • There have been ZERO rumors flying around about this guy. He was a perennial .300 hitter with the Braves during his best seasons when he was healthy and getting consistent playing time neither of which he has been getting 2009. Why not take a chance if it's not going to cost you a lot. Let him come in and compete with Duda for LF and if he shows promise then you can platoon him and Duda and send Cowgill or Kirk to AAA.
     3. Sign Kyle McClellan 1 yr/$1.5MM, Jason Frasor Min: 2 yr/$5MM Max: 2 yr/$7MM
  • The bullpen needs some arms in the back end. McClellan, who is coming off of surgery and has resumed throwing, has shown success as a starter and a reliever with the Cardinals and could be our swing man/innings eater out of the pen. Jason Frasor is an arm that I love. Even at 35 his average FB speed held firm at 93mph and his swing and miss percentage also held firm at 9%. In his career only 29% of inherited runners score against him and he has the arm strength to make multiple inning appearances. Best of all he told MLBTR's Tim Dierkes that "I'm not too picky" when it comes to who he would sign with.

    1. I would be fine with seeing Jon Rauch come back. He had a solid second half once he got his knees drained. Ben Francisco was the other RH OF that might make sense as a stop gap/platoon player.

  2. I've spent no time thinking about the pen this off season.

I assumed Francisco would be the closer... then, he decides to have surgery 2 days ago... he's been on the shelf since Sept... couldn't somebody have figured this out earlier? $6.5mil... unbelievable.

Still, I assume he will be ready on opening day...

You also have Edgin and Parnell

For now, you get Mejia and Hefner... one will be the SP5, the other will come out of the pen...

the Mets signed Greg Burke for the parent team, not Las Vegas... that's 5 guys...

you have left: El Ramirez, Familia, Robert Carson, Darin Gorski (LOOGY)and possiblu, McHugh.

I'd like to see ONE more good pitcher here that can take a major role a la Pedro Feliciano one did... this lowers innings for everyone else and makes them ore effective

It also leaves most of the money still available for an OFer.

Lastly, big potential for growth from system from all-star break 2013-2014 season... Ryan Fraser, Jack Leathersich, Jeffrey Walters, Adam Kolarek, Angel Cuan, Chase Huchington
