In Search For An
Outfielder – Tampa Bay Rays
So far, we have
identified the following outfielders as possible targets for the Mets:
Atlanta – Reed Johnson
Arizona
– A.J. Pollock
Baltimore – Nolan Reimold
Boston
– Jerry Sands
Chicago
Cubs – Brett Jackson
Chicago White Sox - Dayan Viciedo
Cincinnati – Chris Heisey
Cleveland – Thomas Neal -
Colorado – Dexter Fowler
Detroit – none
Houston – J.D. Martinez
Kansas City – none
Los Angeles Angels – Mark Trumbo
Los Angeles Dodgers – Alex Castellanos
Miami Marlins – Gorkys Hernandez
Milwaukee Brewers – Khris Davis
Minnesota Twins – None
Oakland Athletics – Grant Green
New York Yankees – None
Philadelphia Phillies - none
Pittsburgh – Jose Tabata
Seattle – Casper Wells
San Diego – James Darnell
San Francisco –
Gary Brown
St. Louis Cardinals – Shane Robinson
We now move on to the
Tampa Bay Rays, who currently have only five (5) outfielders on their 40-man:
Sam Fuld – lefty – ARB1 - MLB, 98-AB, .255
Brandon Guyer – righty – ARB1-2015
-
Desmond
Jennings – righty – ARB1-2015 – MLB,
505-AB, 13-HR, 47-RBI - LF
Matt Joyce – lefty – ARB1 – MLB, 399-AB, 17-HR, 59-RBI, .241 - RF
Ben
Zobrist – switch – (also plays 2B) - $5.640475mil-2013, FA-2014 – 560-AB,
20, 74 - RF
Non-Roster Invites:
Jason Bourgeois – righty –
Rich Thompson – lefty -
Nick Weglarz – lefty –
Prospect watch:
Mikie Mahtook – right - AA:
153-AB, .248
A very young outfield
with no wiggle room unless they sign someone new or one of their non-roster
invites makes the team. The departure of
BJ Upton has this team looking for additional outfield help as well.
And then…
The Rays get CF Wil Myers from the Royals. He’ s major league ready
and slots right into CF.
On paper, I’d say the
“5” are Jennings, Zobrist, Myer Joyce, and Fuld.
Mets target: Brandon Guyer… speedster… plays all three positions… two great years in a row… 2010 in AA: .344…
2011 in AAA: .312… hit the DL last season and it was announced on 5-25 that he
was going under the knife for a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
I don’t know what his
status is, but, with the addition of Myers and the growth of Mahtook, there’s
no room for this kid in the Rays lineup.
TB has some intriguing guys, and probably the only team with less of a bullpen than the mets. Dangling Parnell might create a matchup. Wright, Zobrist, Davis would be a pretty solid 3-4-5. Zobrist has a reasonable club option for 2014, though I'm sure Sandy might want a little more control than that. Mahtook could probably be had given the acquisition of Myers.
