Mack Ade – A Look Ahead at The Mets First Pick

Mack Ade  –  A Look Ahead at The Mets First Pick

It’s not too early to put together a target list together of the pool of players that may be available when the Mets 11th pick comes around on draft day.

The easy part is to eliminate some of the names that will be long gone.

RHP Mark Appel, Ryne Stanek, and Kohl Stewart, LHP Sean Manaea, 3B Kris Bryant, and OFs Austin Meadows, Austin Wilson, and Clint Frazier will not still be around.

Teams never draft by position; however, it is no big secret that the Mets organization is currently pitcher rich and batter poor. Therefore, there’s a strong possibility that you’ll be hearing one of the following names when the Mets turn comes around:

3B Colin Moran – North Carolina – One of the top pure hitters of the draft. Has excellent plate discipline and the only negative would be his diminished slugging percentage since his freshman year (though his BA went up). Defensively, he gets by and I project him as a future corner outfielder. You’re simply not going to find a more talented hitter.

OF Aaron Judge – Fresno State – Judge has huge power potential. Burst on the scene when he won the 2012 TD Ameritrade HR Derby. He also has the ability to hit for average and can steal a base or two. The down side is the fact that first base or a corner outfield slot might be his only road to the majors due to his 6-7 height. Comparison to Giancarlo Stanton.

OF Willie Abreu – Mater Academy – Abreu is a pull hitter who can run a 6.79 60-yard dash. Has showed great arm strength and projects as a possible centerfielder. Any pop he has is generated by bat speed, not brute power. Known as a baseball rat that is always in the best of shape. Not my favorite pick.

OF-3B Justin Williams – Terrebonne HS – Possibly the best pure athlete in the draft.  He’s all power potential at this point in his career and he’s a long way away, but his ceiling might be unmatched in this draft. Williams only projects to a corner outfielder with limited skills. Power potential like this will be hard to leave on the board.

3B Trey Williams – College of the Canyons – Everyone wondered what happened to the troubled Williams. How's this for respecting his hitting… he was intentionally walked with the bases loaded during his sophomore year in high school. He has an impressive swing with tremendous bat speed. Williams has an upright stance, strong hands, and shows power to all fields Has had trouble’ fitting in’ and has chosen COTC instead of Pepperdine to be his path to the pros. His talent is there but so is his ‘issues’.

  1. Hey Mack, I would be down with Moran, Judge or Justin Williams. I heard rumblings that Williams was headed up in some rankings and could be off the board before we choose.

  2. If Williams moved up and was taken, it could be at the expense of someone like Austin Wilson, which would be just fine by me :)

David, if they pick another shortstop I'm going to become a Muslim.

  3. Fool me once...

    You all know the saying...

Two drafts and yes it's still early to judge, but we can say that the mets front office doesn't want to "overpay" for their first rounder. They leave the best player available on the board.

All I'm saying is, do not be surprised to watch them pick a guy who most people say is a late first rounder.

You're right Mack, they do not need another SS.

  5. I want Judge, all day.

If he's like Stanton, that's what we need.

  6. Judge's HRs in Derby were 500+, some in 3rd tier
