The War Room - 25 Man Roster

Once again, no signings...

This will be a basic open discussion/threat on the 25-man for 2013.

Or, anything else you'd like to discuss...

Take it away.

  1. Morning.

    I'm up early.

First thing I wanted to address was something that came out of the tele-press conference that Sandy Alderson had with selective Bloggers this week.

Regarding the outfield, he REALLY was praising the growth if Juan Lagares while downplaying Matt den Dekker.

He particularly spoke out on the progress Lagares made this off-season in winter ball.

Lagares hit .315/.377/.352/.729 in 54-AB for AGU-DWL, but had only 13-K while drawing 5-BB. Not the biggest sample but the highest batting average of anyone on all the winter teams.

This may be a little hint that he will be competing for a 25-man slot come spring.

  2. Good Morning Mack,
I know it's another week of no signings and the Mets are still the only team without a MLB signing this offseason. That said, I think they are well positioned to improve the team over the next few weeks. Not that they will suddenly create a roster that matches up with thge Nats, but that Alderson will fill the holes with good enough MLB-level players to field a competent and competitive team that allows the core the oppotunity to develop in in an environment that is not overridden with dysfunction, negativety, and poor play. I am becoming cautiously optimistic that they are moving in the right direction and will not towel 2013 from the get go, while at the same time not compromising the future either. Wheeler, Harvey, and D'Arnaud are not worth giving up to acquire Upton, and I think they will stick to that.

  3. Look, the team has done well so far this off-season. They signed the top third baseman available to a long term contract, traded for a future all-star catcher under team control for 6 years, and traded for a potential 2015 SP3 also under team control for 6 years. This is good stuff.

Additionally, the Wilpons actually found a financial institute to give them more money. Go figure.

We went into this off-season in needs of a catcher, relief pitchers, and outfielders. I think Alderson will begin to deal with the pen in the next couple of weeks.

  4. The Mets are showing strong interest in former Giants closer Brian Wilson, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter). Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson watched Wilson yesterday in a private workout.

  5. I'd love to see Brian Wilson on this team. I think he's a great fit for the team's needs and their payroll constraints.

  6. Yeah, you put Wilson in at closer, Frankie Fran in the 8th, and Parnell in the 7th... you may have something

    I will say one thing...

EVERY time I watch a playoff game I'm reminded that each of those teams have at least three great relievers...

  7. I think Wiilson is the right guy for the Mets!! But how much is he worth?

  8. Wilson would be a solid addition for the Mets. I also think Shaun Marcum would be a great addition to the rotation if he is really only looking for a two year contract.

  9. Michael Morse interests me more than Upton as the price to acquire him would likely be far less. It is a year of transition when a 30 HR bat could most certainly help, but there's no reason to gut the farm system now when you've worked so hard to get it to the point where you have some viable chips.

  10. Michi:

Wilson is going to cost you but he's a difference maker... IF he's healthy... I would go 2 years with a 3rd year team option

  11. Michael S:

I'd like to see Mejia shine, but, on paper, the Mets need another top starter for 2013 AND 2014 before the kids grow up... I have no problem with a 2-year deal for pitchers like Marcun

  12. Reese:

at this point, I'd rather build up the pen, add one more right hand hitting outfielder to the mix and go to camp and see what shakes out for 2013....

we can revisit the OF problem halfway through the season when a Santana deal might look good

  13. Reese - I can't agree with one year of Morse over three years of Upton, especially without knowing the cost.

Would you trade Edgin for Morse? I wouldn't. Would you trade Flores, Fulmer plus for Upton? I would.

  14. I'd like to see Mejia too. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets signed a FA starter, traded Gee in a package for a starter, and then slotted Mejia SP5.

I like Marcum, not only for what he can bring to rotation, but what he also might bring in value as a trade chip on a short contract should the Mets fall out of contention. I'll work on a Marcum write up for later this week.

  15. Michael, I don't see Gee being traded unless someone bowls Sandy over or he feels he can sign a second experienced starter within budget. I mean, if Kevin Towers called and said 'hey a package of Gee, Flores, Familia and Den Dekker will get you Upton', Sandy might help Dillon pack his bags.

But we need depth. At this point, starter #5 would be one of Mejia, McHugh or Hefner. Mejia could step up, but we can't bank on it. The others don't quite cut it. Signing Marcum and Chris Young makes a lot of sense. Then Jenrry can work on his command in Vegas while McHugh or Hefner bolsters the pen, and Young serves as the first up injury replacement. I just don't know if Alderson will spring for more than one starter.

Regarding Wilson, assuming he is 100%, I'm excited, although now Sandy is saying he "isn't sure" he will offer him a contract. A healthy Wilson would be just what the doctor ordered. Opening the season with a pen of Wilson, Frankie, Parnell, Edgin, Hefner/McHugh and ElRam/ArmRod/Carson would be fine wiith me.

  16. Wilson is worth pursuing if he's reasonably healthy. Often Tommy John can be a second wind.
Overall, I think the Mets are poised for a similar 2013 - hope to compete for as long as possible.

  17. I think the Mets have the makings of a really good team.

The rotation is not there yet, but there is definite high end potential there with young talented arms in both the majors and minors.

The bullpen is young and lacks a proven closer but they have some young, hard throwers who clearly have ability but lack experience.

With the trade of Dickey, the catching position is set for the future and the rest of the infield is solid as well, especially if Tejada and Davis can progress.

The Mets really need an impact outfielder or two. While easier said than done, the Mets are really lacking an impact bat in the outfielder who can bat fourth or fifth in the lineup and add some length to it. The Mets will have difficulty contending until they see an increased production from the outfield.

The bench has some nice pieces with Turner, Baxter, Hicks, Recker. Maybe a veteran signing to boost the bench and I would be satisfied. The only issue is that the Mets solid bench is forced into starting due to the lack of quality outfielders.

  18. So far you got Santana, Niese, Harvey and Gee as your starters. With Mejia, McHugh and Hefner as potential #5. When the Mets go with Mejia (as I have read) and Hefner as your long man/spot starter you only have McHugh left. And remember last year when Pelfrey got hurt? Signing Marcum on a one year deal makes sence to me. Perhaps you can even add Young for depth. With Wheeler hopefully ready aroung the ASB you could have 2 nice chips to trade when Santana and Marcum do well.

And for the relievers you have Francisco, Parnell, Edgin, Carson, Hefner. I would prefer another lefty so Carson can go to Las Vegas. I also would try to sign 2 relievers like Wilson, Valverde, Rauch, Juan Carlos Oviedo (AKA Leo Nunez), Frankie Rodriguez, Matt Lindstrom. Offer those players a contract for a year with another club option after that year. When they are very good and the Mets are out around the ASB you could trade them.

And sign Scott Hairston for 2 years and make that 2nd year a club option or make it guaranteed after so many at bats in 2013.
