#11 RHP Juerys Familia
Bats: R Throws: R
Height: 6' 4" Weight: 230 lb
Acquired: 2007 international signing, Dominican Republic

2012: (AAA) 9-9, 4.73 ERA, 4.8 BB/9, 8.4 K/9, 1.591 WHIP
2011: (A+/AA) 5-5, 2.90 ERA, 3.1 BB/9, 9.6 K/9, 1.202 WHIP
2010: (A+) 6-9, 5.58 ERA, 5.5 BB/9, 10.2 K/9, 1.579 WHIP
2009: (A) 10-6, 2.69 ERA, 3.1 BB/9, 7.3 K/9, 1.157 WHIP
2008: (R) 2-2, 2.79 ERA, 2.3 BB/9, 6.6 K/9, 1.142 WHIP

Familia got off to a rough start in 2012 often times looking unprepared for AAA. However the tools he possesses are excellent. His fastball/sinker mix induced one of the highest groundball rates in the International League and gets a lot of swings and misses. He also has a very good slider that he uses to rack up K's against right handers. The downside with Juerys is that A) His slider is inconsistent, B) his changeup is below average, and C) His BB rates are too high. These three things combined along with the fact that he's probably going to get a second shot at AAA tells me that this guys future place is in the Mets bullpen. He'll still get the opportunity to start in Las Vegas but there are better candidates behind him and the Mets will need him sometime this year.

Anticipated Assignment: (AAA) Las Vegas starting rotation.
ETA: All-Star break or sooner if Brandon Lyon becomes injured.

  1. Familia pitched this week... walks, runs, and only around 50% strikes... I'm not sure anymore about this guy

  2. Mack,

Its the first 3 games of ST....I won't get too concerned about anyone until April.

IMO Familia is NOT going to be a future rotation piece but he will become a valuable bullpen piece.

  3. I'm worried about this guy. He doesn't look ML ready anytime soon. Don't think he'll be in the top 20 conversation come mid season.

  4. interesting - Michael Fulmer cracked the top 100 list on BP

My concern about Familia has nothing to do with the length of ST.

This was just another typical Familiar outing that has dominated his career so far. He's simply too inconsistent to be a rotation starter, especially in a system that has so much talent.

I only hope the Mets realize that and don't put him in the Vegas rotation. Send him to the AAA pen and let him turn his game round as a reliever.

  6. Sorry Mack thought you were referring to the early ST games from the first line of your comment.

Fulmer cracking Top 100 doesn't surprise me.

and Justin.....you may be right. Last year Familia was a Top 5 in the system. This year he is out of the Top 10. If he continues to struggle he will be out of the top 15 with all the arms behind him

Nothing to be surprised about. I was referring to his 1st outing this year bu I should have been more clear about my thoughts on his career.

He frustrates me so much because I've seen this kid pitch and, when he's on, he has what it takes to be a pro

  8. Familia is frustrating to watch. I think like Parnell, it is all mental with him. If he gets it, I am thinking his role is as an 8th inning guy.
