#13 RHP Jacob DeGrom
Bats: L Throws: R
Height: 6' 4" Weight: 185 lb
Acquired: 2010 draft, 9th round, Stetson University
2012: (A/A+) 9-3, 2.43 ERA, 1.6 BB/9, 7.8 K/9, 0.997 WHIP

If you remembered Jacob DeGrom before he 2012 season started raise your hand......(no not even me? Ok...lol) DeGrom was a forgotten pitcher before the beginning of 2012 after missing the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery and after only getting 6 starts the year before. At the time of the draft he was seen as an extreme reach pick. He had only pitched for 1 season for Stetson after converted from a SS and was seen as extremely raw. This year, 100% healthy, Jacob flashed a 92-94 MPH Fastball with plus movement and control as well as an average slider and change-up. His repertoire and control should keep him starting long term but he'll have to continue his breaking pitch development if hes going to succeed in Binghamton which he should reach by July. As an added note at 6' 4" and 185 lbs, he should fill out a bit more and add 2 or 3 ticks to his fastball which would turn him into a potential #2.
Anticipated Assignment: (A+) Port St. Lucie starting rotation
It was Frank Viola that turned me on to DeGrom. I didn't even know he was on the Savannah roster when Viola said to me "wait till you see this DeGrom kid... he sits at 94".
ReplyDeleteThe Gnats had slipped him in on the roster the day before after he cleared the Doctors coming off TJS. I thought the team had dropped him.
Ya know....it's really looking like A) Minaya's 2010 draft looks really good and B) Minaya's international signings from 2008-2010 look VERY GOOD.
ReplyDeleteFor all the crap that we gave him about poor MLB Signings turns out he was pretty good with the minor league system.
People must have loved what they saw this year considering his low draft pick and injury history.
ReplyDeleteStats dont lie Justin....he was good this year in Savannah and was actually better in St. Lucie.
ReplyDeleteDeGrom is yet another potential great starting pitcher for this system. So many arms, so few spots.
