Mack's Mets #24 organizational prospect is......
#24 RHP Cory Mazzoni
Bats: R Throws: R
Height: 6' 1" Weight: 190 lb
Acquired: 2011 draft, 2nd round, North Carolina State University
2012: (A+/AA) 10-6, 3.93 ERA, 6.5 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, 1.316 WHIP
2011: (SS-A/A+) 2-1, 1.38 ERA, 12.5 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, 1.154 WHIP
Mazzoni had himself a rather lackluster 2012. Despite finishing the year with a respectable 3.93 ERA his peripherals were very underwhelming. Once he reached Binghamton, he saw his WHIP climb above 1.3 and his H/9 to 10. Granted this can be due to needing some time to adjust to a level of competition thats finally competitive for him as he blew through Brooklyn and St. Lucie. In any case, his mid 90's fastball and excellent command should be more than enough to keep him in the starting rotation and at worse become a very useful bullpen piece with a chance to be a September call-up.
Anticipated Assignment: (AA) Binghamton starting rotation.
I was really excited about this pick and thought it would be the steal of the draft.
ReplyDeleteI seem to be wrong.
There is too much talent in the Mets system for him to get a rotation shot. He's go to the pen next season regardless what he does this year.
lets not call him dead in the pen yet Mack. Binghamton isn't as crowded with pitching talent as the other levels so he'll at least get "a shot" to stick. But he's def destined to the pen once he gets to Vegas.
ReplyDeleteEven if he ends up a good bullpen piece, along with Fulmer and Leathersich, they are three great arms from the 2011 draft. If Nimmo pans out, that was a good draft for this front office.
ReplyDeleteSoto, I think said what you just said.
