First
all, how scientific is this process?
That’s
simple, of the last ten mock drafts:
-one has the first round with 30 picks
-four have it with 32 picks
-two have it as 33 picks
-one has 34
-another list 39
-and the last has 40
I
still consider the big money cutoff at 33. You have that list, you’re buying a
big ass truck.
There
are a few players racing up the mocks because of the efforts in the past two
weeks. Rice’s SP Austin Kubitza seems to be able
to do nothing wrong, Oklahoma junior RHP Jonathan Gray is
off the charts in the past three weeks, Jackosnville SP RHP Chris Anderson put himself on the map, Vanderbilt LHP Zevin Ziomek is basically unhittable, Minnesota’s Tom Windle threw a no-hitter, Serra HS (CA 1B-3B DJ Peterson and
North Carolina 3B Collin Moran have hit the snot
off the ball, and Loganville HS (GA) Clint Frazier is
playing a man against boys.
Remember,
players go up, players go down:

And the Mets select with the number 11 pick...Calvin Biggio.
ReplyDeleteOn draft night...Jonathon Mayo interviews Paul DePodesta.
Mayo: So, Paul, interesting pick taking Biggio at 11. Most mocks had him going much later in the first round...Some thought he might slip into the second round. Your thought process?
DePo: we just love this pick and we're really excited that Calvin was available for us. We had Calvin at number 2 on our board, right behind Jonah Wesley. Of course, once we found out Jonah wouldn't take 10th round money, we decided to go with Biggio because his daddy is rich and we figured he wouldn't need too much cash.
Mayo: interesting. That's what I figured... I knew it had to be about the dollars.
DePo: well, you know us, if its not about the dollars, then it don't makes sense....that's a little play on words I learned in Oakland from Billy Beane. He'd say that every time he beat up a scout.
Mayo: Paul, a lot of people thought you'd pick the best player available considering how the whole Bourn fiasco went. Especially now that, at this point, the Mets are twenty games below .500 and your outfield has collectively hit 2 home runs. Picking the draft pick over Bourn just seems crazy now. Your thoughts?
DePo: well, choosing Calvin allows us to spread our pool money out so thin, that we'll be able to get another player or two in the later rounds that normally might be headed for college.
Mayo: yeah, but none of them will ever be the impact player you left on the board?
DePo: oh, well...uh, I...uh, you noticed that too? Trust me, these things have a way of balancing out. In six years, Mets fans will be excited about Biggio banging on the door to Citifield.
Mayo: somehow I doubt it.
very well done, Charles
