Open Discussion - Johan Santana Out For Season

  1. Johan Santana has a 'probable' re-tear of left shoulder capsule.

So, that's that. He flew today back to New York to see the same doctor that said it was okay the day before Johan asked to pitch in the WBC.

The 'bottom' line is that the Mets have no insurance on the last year of the contract, they have to pay him around $131mil and change, and then, that is that.

It really doesn't matter if he comes back in 2014 at 100%. The Mets won't pay him to come back and he sure as hell won't pitch for grins.

    His Mets career is over.

For now, Aaron Laffey will replace him in the rotation, opening a relief slot for a long man like Gonzalez Germen (I'm speculating).

    Talk away...

Dan Warthen told me Saturday he was very encouraged by Santana's progress, was optimistic based on improvement over previous week. Either symptoms just started in recent days, or there was some disconnect between team and pitcher as to his health.

  3. From 2002-2010 a total of 121 pitchers started at least 125 games. Johan Santana was the only one with an ERA below 3.00.

  4. This is a terrible loss. Not only does the rotation become extremely thin, but any hopes of trading Johan for prospects are gone. I agree that his career is likely over and this is a terrible way to go out. He will always have a place in Mets fan's hearts after throwing our only no hitter. Just a shame.

  5. Awful....no return value on him in trade.

    1. I don't think it was ever in the cards for the Mets to get a meaningful return for Santana. Even if he pitched well into the break, the risk of injury was high. Plus his huge salary and buyout were limiting factors.

  6. I can't see him coming back from a second surgery.

With all this great young pitching coming through the system, wouldn't be a bad idea to have someone like Rick Peterson around who understood the bio-mechanics of pitching.

  7. Don't cry for me, says Santana.
The truth is I'm very wealthy.
    I gave you good times.

    But that no hitter,
    my piece de resistance!

  8. I hate the idea of Laffey replacing him in the rotation, even if it is only until Marcum is ready. I guess that means that Hefner becomes a permanent member of the rotation. Laffey is a much better reliever than a starter. He should probably be the second lefty in the pen, although I think they will give that spot to Rice. They could also opt for Carson, merely because he is already on the 40 man, but that would be a huge mistake. Not that Alderson is above making huge mistakes.

I do not think that Germen has a snowball's chance in hell of making the team as the long man in the pen. At this point, to me the pen looks like Parnell, Lyon, Edgin, Atchison, Hawkins, Rice and Burke, although Familia could be pushing his way back into the picture with his most recent outings.

  9. This sucks, but I'd rather have it this way than being strung along all season by a possible Johan comeback that never materializes. At least now they know what they have to work with for the rest of the year and can plan accordingly. Wheeler on April 21st.
